JOB SUMMARY
The Cancer Exercise Specialist is responsible for guiding individuals diagnosed with cancer through a four-phase exercise program designed to lessen the harmful effects of cancer treatments and cancer related side effects. This position requires collaboration with medical professionals to provide a comprehensive approach to cancer rehabilitation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Perform initial assessments and re-assessments to evaluate the client’s current fitness status and determine appropriate heart rate/RPE ranges for program phase.
2. Educate clients on available services and make appropriate recommendations based on current health status, needs, and goals.
3. Develop, implement, modify, progress, and assess effectiveness of individualized one-on-one training programs, including the delivery and monitoring of independent workouts, while honoring program phase guidelines.
4. Properly execute, demonstrate, and explain exercises utilized in training programs and be able to Identify the need for, provide, and demonstrate exercise regressions and/or progressions as appropriate for the individual.
5. Identify and explain safety considerations of all exercises used in training, including proper and preferred used of all equipment.
6. Maintain clear, concise, legible documentation according to company procedure for each training session.
7. Conduct facility tours for a variety of individuals including but not limited to prospects, clients, family members of clients, local business owners, and medical professionals.
8. Maintain a neat, clean, and safe facility through regular performance of cleaning/sanitation procedures and the identification and rectification of unsafe situations in the facility, such as damaged equipment and/or improper use of equipment.
9. Promote the company, individual services, and self to enhance company and personal growth.
EDUCATION
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, exercise science, physical education, or exercise-related field. Courses in exercise techniques, special populations, and cancer rehabilitation are beneficial.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
ACSM Certified Cancer Exercise Trainer required within 6 months of hiring to work independently with clients. Personal trainer certification from an NCCA Accredited organization (NSCA, ACSM, ACE, NASM) is desirable. ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist is desirable.
CPR certification is desirable.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
· Ability to learn and operate company software utilized in the scheduling and delivery of company services.
· Knowledge of current and future cancer exercise trends.
· Knowledge of strength training principles, exercise techniques, safety considerations/precautions, and spotting techniques.
· Knowledge of customer service and motivational interviewing techniques.
· Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and respectfully, orally and in writing, with a variety of audiences.
· Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of clients, patients, staff members, business owners, and other professionals while working to achieve company, departmental, team, and/or individual goals.
· Ability to work both independently and with a team in a fast-paced environment under broad or limited supervision.
· Ability to respond quickly to changing demands and adjust performance to accommodate changes in departmental/company direction and policies/procedures.
· Knowledge of and adherence to scope of practice.
· Knowledge of certifying body code of conduct/ethics and requirements necessary to maintain certification.
· Ability to set priorities, organize workload, handle multiple responsibilities, meet deadlines, fulfill commitments, and complete work on schedule.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 ( ) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
OTHER INFORMATION
This position involves working within an indoor office environment around general office equipment as well as outdoors. This position may include non-traditional hours including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
