CMiT is seeking a motivated, career, and customer-oriented Senior SAP ASE / Sybase DBA to join our team in support of a Federal Customer. This high-visibility cybersecurity modernization initiative focuses on advancing customer's Zero Trust maturity through secure identity, access, and data integration solutions.
We are looking for a Senior SAP ASE / Sybase DBA with strong Data Architecture expertise to lead the data transition from a legacy Sybase environment to a modern, Okta-based Identity Management system. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between complex legacy data structures and modern identity schemas, ensuring data integrity, security, and seamless migration throughout the customer's implementation and legacy system decommissioning effort.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the technical mapping of legacy SAP ASE / Sybase data attributes to Okta user profiles and universal directories and clearly explain complex legacy schemas to migration and engineering teams.
- Develop and implement the data architecture strategy for the legacy SAP ASE / Sybase environment, ensuring database modernization and decommissioning paths align with Federal customer's Zero Trust goals.
- Oversee monitoring, installation, troubleshooting, and tuning of SAP ASE / Sybase databases to maintain stability during high-load migration and data extraction activities.
- Collaborate with engineers to build and validate data pipelines (e.g., Azure Data Factory or equivalent) that move data from Sybase to cloud-based identity targets, including identifying and eliminating obsolete or "dead" stored procedure logic that should not be migrated.
- Enforce robust database security controls and data quality standards, including metadata management and data lineage, to ensure sensitive identity data remains protected in alignment with Zero Trust principles and federal requirements.
- Formulate long-term strategies for database optimization, risk reduction, and the orderly sunsetting of legacy production environments.
- Provide expert-level operational support for SAP ASE / Sybase and IQ environments, including backup and recovery, replication troubleshooting, patching, and capacity planning.
- Analyze and document complex legacy stored procedures to extract embedded business rules and transformation logic for migration into the new identity framework.
- Perform deep-dive query optimization and indexing strategies to ensure high-volume migration-related data extraction does not impact production availability.
- Manage and troubleshoot Sybase Replication Server to ensure data consistency across legacy nodes, staging environments, and migration pipelines.
Qualifications
Required
- 8 years of hands-on experience in SAP ASE / Sybase administration, specifically with SAP ASE, Replication Server, and performance-critical stored procedures.
- 10 years of Mastery of SAP ASE / Sybase T-SQL, including debugging, refactoring, and optimization of highly complex stored procedures and triggers.
- 4 Years of Proven experience in schema design and data modeling, with the ability to translate relational database structures into modern, identity-centric or non-relational schemas (e.g., Okta / JSON).
- Experience with cloud-native ETL and data integration tools to facilitate secure data movement from legacy environments.
- Familiarity with Identity and Access Management (IAM/ICAM) concepts and how database structures support Zero Trust architectures.
- Knowledge of federal cybersecurity frameworks (NIST, FISMA) and data governance practices, including lineage, metadata, and auditability.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor junior engineers and clearly communicate complex legacy-to-modern technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven track record using Showplan, Statistics IO, and DBCC commands to identify bottlenecks and remediate poorly performing queries.
- Deep understanding of SAP ASE / Sybase internals, including memory management, lock contention, and I/O behavior, to maintain stability during intensive data migration operations.
Education/Certification Required
- Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.
Clearance Required
- Must be a U.S. Citizen (no dual citizenship)
- Ability to pass a background investigation
- Able to obtain and maintain DHS Suitability / Entry on Duty (EOD)
