Parts Picker & Sorter - Sheet Metal Fabrication

Job Description

This role is dedicated to the first critical post-cutting stage: removing, sorting, and staging parts from the laser shuttle table for downstream operations. As the Parts Picker & Sorter, you'll be the link between raw laser-cut parts and the rest of production. You’ll need to work swiftly and with care, reading job documents and organizing a wide variety of parts onto carts and pallets. You’ll also clear out skeletons, keep track of part counts, and ensure jobs are fully and accurately transferred downstream.

Responsibilities

• Remove parts from laser shuttle: Pull cut parts from the sheet metal skeleton with care, especially finished aluminum and delicate parts.

• Sort by job and stage accurately: Place parts on carts or pallets according to job documentation, labeled with the correct job number.

• Remove and break down skeletons: Clear used sheet skeletons from the shuttle table quickly and safely to keep laser production flowing.

• Track part counts: Keep accurate quantities for each job and flag any issues or missing parts early.

• Handle a variety of materials: Work with parts ranging from 0.020” thick stainless to 1” plate steel. Use care for fragile parts and force when needed for heavy material.

• Scrap sorting: Organize scrap for proper disposal, separating usable drops from true scrap material.

• Forklift operation: Use a ride-on forklift to transport skeletons and pallets of parts around the facility.

• Maintain flow: Stay organized and focused to ensure production isn’t delayed; communicate with the laser operator and downstream departments when issues arise.

• Keep your station clean: Maintain a clean and safe working area, free from clutter or hazards.

Requirements

• Experience with metal parts: Familiarity with laser-cut or fabricated parts in a job shop or manufacturing environment strongly preferred.

• Ride-on forklift experience required: You must be able to safely operate a ride-on forklift. Certification is a plus.

• Reading skills & attention to detail: Must be able to read job travelers, understand job numbers, and track multiple orders at once without confusion.

• Physical stamina: This is a highly physical job. You must be on your feet all day and regularly lift parts up to 50 lbs.

• Focus & urgency: You’re the first line of downstream accuracy. Sloppy sorting, missing parts, or mislabeling causes real problems — this job requires care, speed, and focus.

• Positive team player: You’ll work directly with the laser operator and secondary operations team. Clear communication and accountability are a must.
