Title: Licensed Veterinary Technician

Reports to: Practice Manager and Tech Supervisor

Summary:

The licensed veterinary technician plays a key role in the medical and inventory operations of the hospital. They work closely with the doctors to provide excellent medical care. They partner with the Practice Manager to create orders and maintain inventory under a present budget.

The Ideal Candidate

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician
  • 3-5 years of practice veterinary experience

  • Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying records and equipment weighing up to 40 lbs; requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Working conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.

Veterinary Technician Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Can provide compassionate care to patients and clients in all aspects of a veterinary hospital.
  • Keeps accurate medical records in accordance hospital policy.
  • Proficient in all exam room operations including physical assessment and legible record keeping. Can educate clients and answer medical. Confident in discussing all aspects of veterinary care. Provides estimates and discuss financial commitments. Explain follow up and home care instructions.
  • Understands usage, dosage, and common side-effects for commonly used prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients. Gives SQ, IM and IV injections. Can place IV catheters.
  • Can assist the veterinarian in medical, surgical and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; administers anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids.
  • Can properly care for all surgical materials; keep the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
  • Can perform emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
  • Can perform clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
  • Can effectively position for and take radiographs.

Inventory Management

  • Responsible for preparing purchase orders for weekly orders.
  • Responsible for maintaining appropriate levels of “quantity on hand”, “reorder level”, and “reorder quantity” in the veterinary software.
  • Receives orders and update in software.
  • Effectively communicates backordered items.
  • Handles or oversees delivery receipt and unpacking protocol.
  • Handles or oversees computer receipt of all inventory items to reflect accurate inventory-on-hand values.
  • Distributes inventory to the correct areas of the hospital.
  • Oversees rotation of stock supporting the “first in-first out” theory.
  • Handles or oversees inventory counts as directed by the Practice Manager.
  • Handles or oversees that no outdated or recalled stock is available for sale.
  • Handles or oversees identification of waste within the inventory department and takes corrective action.
  • Responsible for monthly controlled drug reconciliation.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16.00 - $21.00 per hour
