Position: McDermott Intern for Adult Programs

Reports to: Program Manager for Arts & Letters Live

Level: Intern

Classification: Non-Exempt, Full-Time, Hourly

Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision insurance; paid holiday, personal and sick time; $500 for professional development

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm with one hour for lunch; regular weekend and evening programs required and adjusted for accordingly; ability to work remotely 2 days per week in alignment with program needs following introductory period

Internship Period: September 3, 2024 - May 9, 2025

Salary: $15/hour, 35 hours per week


Scope of Internship:

The intern will assist with the development, implementation, and promotion of numerous onsite, offsite, and virtual lectures, performances, workshops, and special events for adults throughout the year, including Arts & Letters Live, the DMA’s literary and performing arts series. The intern will split their time between in-office work and program support on evenings and weekends. The intern will assist in program management and will work closely with guest speakers, performers, volunteers, artists, and the public. While reporting to the Program Manager for Arts & Letters Live, the intern will work closely with multiple team members for a holistic experience within the Adult Programs team. The intern will work with their supervisor to plan and lead a pre-event tour(s); coordinate and take the lead on an Arts & Letters Live event; and lead the content creation for the Museum Murder Mystery event. 


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interact with visitors and provide customer service support during evening and weekend programs
  • Process ticket orders and answer emails and phone calls from the public
  • Collaborate with colleagues to brainstorm, research, and develop programming for adult audiences connected to the permanent collection and upcoming exhibitions 
  • Write content and copy for web and promotional materials
  • Attend and participate in weekly meetings with their supervisor and regular departmental meetings with Adult Programs and Education
  • Contribute to and collaborate with the Adult Programs team to achieve departmental and institutional goals

Internship Goals:

  • Gain experience with program development in a museum setting, including planning, budgeting, logistics, execution, and evaluation
  • Grow skills in customer service and public speaking
  • Learn the process of proposing and developing program ideas through creative collaboration with colleagues
  • Learn methods for creating educational content for adult audiences inspired by the Museum's diverse collection areas and exhibitions
  • Ascertain professional goals and interests through the support of mentorship
  • Develop professional communication and interpersonal skills through collaboration with Museum colleagues
  • Understand  the roles and functions of different staff within the Museum as well as  the relationship between the departments and how they all function  together to comprise the organization

Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certification

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in art history, art education, museum studies or the humanities prior to the start of the internship
  • Prior experience with event planning or program coordination encouraged 

Key Qualifications

  • Strong time management and organizational skills to successfully balance program and office duties
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work on a team
  • Valid driver’s license (or ability to secure one) and ability to drive to program sites occasionally as needed

Personal Statement Cover Letter

A detailed one to two page cover letter explaining your interest in an art museum career. Include information regarding your personal learning expectations for the internship; any prior museum or art related experience; and any prior programming experience, especially as it relates to the specific position.
