Job Description
Purpose of Position: To perform maintenance and repair of various utility facilities, equipment, buildings, road surfaces, and grounds within the Utilities.
Essential Functions: (Must be able to perform these functions with or without a reasonable accommodation).
- Performs general repair and maintenance work on Utilities buildings, lift stations, wells, equipment, road surfaces, grounds, and related facilities; performs skilled and semi-skilled and manual work involving grounds maintenance, road/roadside maintenance, building maintenance, painting, carpentry, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, or other projects; assists other departments in conducting repair/maintenance projects as needed.
- Performs various tasks associated with utility projects, building maintenance, or road/grounds maintenance; cuts/lays pipe; repairs roads and asphalt surfaces; patches potholes; repairs ditches; constructs sidewalks and driveways; cuts, breaks up, and removes asphalt/concrete; builds/sets up concrete forms; pours and finishes concrete; lays brickwork; levels ground; paints surfaces of buildings, fences, machinery, or other items; mows/edges grass, right-of-way areas, and landscaped areas; lays sod; plants/waters flowers, trees, and shrubs; mixes and applies pesticides; cuts trees and tree limbs; picks up and disposes of debris/trash; shovels, rakes, or spreads ground materials; digs holes/trenches and shovels materials; lifts/moves heavy materials; flags traffic.
- Assists with electrical projects as needed.
- Skilled carpentry work; such as framing, furniture assembly, furniture repair, roof finishing, constructing shelves, constructing decks, building benches, and various other skilled carpentry tasks.
- Skilled and semi-skilled metal fabrication such as cutting, grinding, bending and welding various metals; fabricates various fixtures, tools, and other useful devices, repairs utility and equipment trailers, assists other departments with welding repairs to heavy equipment and vehicles.
- Inspects/tests machinery, equipment and parts for proper operations; makes adjustments, repairs or replacements as appropriate; reports problem situations.
- Performs general/preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
- Transports, hauls, loads, and unloads various equipment and materials associated with projects.
- Follows established safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.
- Monitors inventory levels of department materials, tools, equipment, and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new or replacement materials.
- Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, daily work reports, work orders, vehicle maintenance records, material sheets, or other documents.
- Regular attendance is required as outlined in the company’s attendance policy.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: (these are required to perform the essential functions of the job).
- Must be able to operate a variety of equipment and tools associated with work activities, which may include a 26,000 LB GVWR and under utility truck, 26,000 LB GVWR and under dump truck, backhoe, roller/packer, tamper, zero-turning radius lawnmower, farm tractor with various attachments, tractor-mounted rotary cutter, skid steer-mounted brush cutter, skid steer loader with various attachments, mini excavator, mower, blower, edger, string trimmer with various attachments, generator, air compressor, jackhammer, chain saw, drill, pipe saw, meters, gauges, mechanic tools, plumbing tools, hand tools, digging tools, measuring devices, or radio communications equipment.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks effectively, work under pressure and to prioritize.
- Must be able to proficiently read, write and communicate clearly in English.
- Must be able to maintain a positive and professional attitude and an effective working relationship with, and among coworkers.
- Must be able to travel throughout the Baldwin County area regularly.
- Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to perform various calculations as required for carpentry and metal fabrication including determining area, volume, length, and materials quantities.
- Must be able to read and correctly interpret various measuring devices including tape measure, carpenter’s rule, measuring wheel, and other devices needed for carpentry and metal fabrication.
- Must possess effective communication skills with ability to handle difficult people or situations.
- Must be able to stand and walk around regularly, both inside and outside, sometimes in inclement weather and on uneven terrain.
- Must be able to lift, carry, push and/or pull objects and materials in excess of 50 lbs.
Experience and Education Requirements
- High school diploma or GED;
- Three (3) years previous experience and/or training involving grounds maintenance, road maintenance, general building maintenance, equipment/mechanical maintenance, and/or equipment operation a plus; or
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license and be insurable.
- Must pass a Drug Screen, physical and criminal background check.
Working Conditions
May require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, fumes, electric currents, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, or toxic agents.
Salary : $30,500 - $38,600
