Description

The Department of Classics at Dartmouth College invites applications for the newly established Matthew Wiencke Postdoctoral Fellowship. Applicants for this position should be specialists in the languages, literature, philosophy, material culture, or history of the Greek or Roman world. Our department has nine full-time, tenure-track faculty members with a wide variety of research interests in languages, literature, material culture, and history. We maintain a vibrant academic program that enrolls in excess of 900 students each year.

This is a two-year residential fellowship with a start date of 1 July 2026. Fellows are expected to teach one course per academic year and to pursue research activities while participating fully in the intellectual life of the Classics Department and Dartmouth College. Fellows receive an annual stipend of approximately $67,580 plus benefits and an allocation for research expenses (exact funding levels will be set at the time of offer). Postdoctoral fellows at Dartmouth enjoy full use of College resources such as the library, the computing center, the Leslie Center for the Humanities, the Hood Museum of Art, and the Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts.

Wiencke Fellows also participate in mentoring and professional development programming, including guidance in preparing for faculty careers. Postdoctoral researchers are also supported by the Guarini School for Graduate and Advanced Studies, including their community initiatives.

Qualifications
  • PhD, or ABD with degree conferred by the start date, in Classics or a closely related discipline focusing on the Greek or Roman World.
  • Degree conferred between January 1, 2023 and July 1, 2026.
  • Ability to teach elementary Latin language.
