What are the responsibilities and job description for the point-to-point microwave engineer position at Datacom Edge?
Job Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented Point-to-Point (PtP) Microwave Engineer to lead the feasibility assessment, planning, and implementation of microwave backhaul solutions for MDU (Multi-Dwelling Unit) properties. This role is critical for enabling wireless broadband access to buildings where fiber access may be limited or delayed.
Key Responsibilities:- Conduct site surveys and feasibility studies for microwave backhaul to MDUs.
- Evaluate line-of-sight (LOS) conditions and document potential link paths.
- Perform link budget calculations, path analysis, and throughput modeling.
- Use tools such as Google Earth, Ubiquiti Link Planner, Pathloss, or similar to design and validate PtP links.
- Work closely with real estate, permitting, and deployment teams to assess mounting options on rooftops or adjacent infrastructure.
- Recommend appropriate microwave radio platforms (e.g., Cambium, Ubiquiti, Siklu, Mimosa) based on site constraints and performance needs.
- Develop installation plans, equipment BOMs, and integration documentation.
- Support field teams during installation, including antenna alignment and link testing.
- Collaborate with IP engineering for backhaul integration to network core or aggregation switches.
- Document as-built designs, signal metrics, and final throughput performance.
- 3 years experience in microwave or wireless backhaul engineering.
- Proficient in PtP design tools and RF fundamentals (Fresnel zones, interference, polarization).
- Strong experience with LOS surveys using mobile apps, drone, or manual tools.
- Understanding of MDU environments, including access limitations and aesthetic requirements.
- Familiarity with building codes, rooftop access policies, and permitting constraints.
- Ability to assess bandwidth requirements for residential deployments (up to gigabit levels).
- Working knowledge of Layer 2/3 networking, VLANs, and QoS is a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for engineering reports and customer presentations.
- Previous experience deploying broadband or wireless access in MDU or urban environments.
- Understanding of fiber handoff points, GPON, or Ethernet-over-microwave solutions.
- Experience with tools like AutoCAD, Visio, or network documentation platforms.
- Comfortable working at heights or coordinating with tower/rooftop crews (safety-certified).
- Mix of field assessments, remote design work, and cross-functional coordination.
- Occasional travel to MDU sites for surveys and testing.
