Fort Bliss is a United States Army post in New Mexico and Texas, with its headquarters in El Paso, Texas. Established in 1848, the fort was renamed in 1854 to honor Bvt. Lt. Colonel William W.S. Bliss, U.S. Army officer, private secretary and son-in-law of President Zachary Taylor.
Fort Bliss has an area of about 1,700 square miles. It is the largest installation in FORSCOM (United States Army Forces Command) and second largest in the Army overall, the largest being the adjacent White Sands Missile Range. The portion of the post located in El Paso County, Texas, is a census-designated place with a population of 8,591 in the 2010 census. Fort Bliss provides the largest contiguous tract of restricted airspace in the Continental United States, used for missile and artillery training and testing, and at 992,000 acres has the largest maneuver area, ahead of the National Training Center, which has 642,000 acres.
Since 1921, William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC) has provided care for Military Personnel and their eligible Family Members. WBAMC is one of two trauma centers in El Paso County and consists of twelve stories that cover more than a half-million square feet of floor space. Responsibilities
As a Health Technician (Surgical) you will:
- Cleans operating room post-surgery, removes and disposes of soiled and/or contaminated materials.
- Conducts sponge, sharps, and instrument counts with the charge nurse, verifying total count at end of surgical procedures or change of personnel.
- Passes instruments to the surgeon and maintains alertness for complications developing during surgery.
- Screens each patient to ensure all requirements are met and transports patients from the hospital units to the operating room.
- Selects, assembles, and organizes required supplies, equipment, and instruments in accordance with operative work sheets, physician preference cards and/or conferring with physicians or charge nurse.
- Orients and trains newly assigned personnel and students explaining operating room procedures and requirements.
Performs Other Duties as Assigned.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).OREducation: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as medical technician, or surgical technician.ORCombination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
