LITERACY FELLOW
Reports to DHA Literacy Fellow Project Manager
The Literacy Fellow will provide reading intervetions to Tier II and Tier III 2nd – 4th grade students at assigned elementary schools with a focus on 3rd grade. The Literacy Fellow will contribute to the team’s effort by providing high-quality instruction to small groups of students using an evidence-based, scripted phonics curriclum while creating a positive learning environment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education, social work, political or public administration/policy
- Minimum of two years of teaching experience, preferably in the Mississippi Delta
- Valid teaching license
- Experience with implementing Common Core Standards
- Preferred experience in teaching phonics
- Preference for this position will be given to Teach for America Alumni
- Must have a valid Mississippi Driver’s License, proof of insurance, and must provide personal vehicles to travel
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide high-quality reading interventions to identified 2nd – 4th grade students at assigned schools to increase students’ phonics skills and overall reading comprehension.
- Implement small group and one-on-one instruction in fluency, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension.
- Serve as content expert in monthly accountability staff meetings.
- Assist in the design, plans, and implementation of summer camps.
- Provide a positive atmosphere that is conducive to learning while managing students’ behavior, setting high expectations, encouraging students, and celebrating successes.
- Work closely with classroom teachers to analyze student work and coordinate the implementation of appropriate intervention strategies.
- Communicate regularly and effectively with the school administrators, teachers, counselors, students, and families while following confidentiality procedures.
- Maintain all required data and documents that track progress and interventions in a timely manner.
- Create and maintain student portfolios for each intervention student.
- Work cooperatively with all school and DHA staff.
- Work in coordination with the school district liaison, the principal and assistant principal, following all school directions set out by the school board and school-level principal.
- Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skill in literacy.
- Participate, plan, or actively lead internal projects within DHA.
- Other duties as assigned.
