Nuclear Engineer Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

As a full-performance level Nuclear Engineer, you will serve as a Program Manager for the Fusion Nuclear Science (FES) research portfolio. Your duties include:

• Monitoring and assessing fusion nuclear science and technology progress, including breeding blankets, fuel cycle research, and neutronics.
• Representing Fusion Energy Science in inter-agency partnerships such as the nuclear data group and Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
• Developing Notice of Funding Opportunity and Funding Announcements, conducting peer reviews, and preparing funding recommendations.
• Developing plans for the Fusion Nuclear Science subprogram based on research outcomes from the FES Long-Range Plan.

Requirements:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for this position:

• Be a U.S. Citizen or National.
• Participate in the e-Verify program.
• Meet the Selective Service System registration requirements.
• Pass a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Submit a Financial Disclosure Statement, OGE-450, Executive Branch Personnel Confidential Financial Disclosure Report upon entering the position and annually.
• Complete a one-year probationary period.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, you must have a degree in Engineering and meet the specialized experience requirements.

• BASIC REQUIREMENT: A degree in Engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET or courses in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics.
• Candidates must also meet the following specialized experience requirements:
• GS-14: Identifying opportunities in the fusion nuclear science program, supporting community work groups, and researching scientific opportunities.
• GS-15: Organizing work groups and events, researching scientific opportunities, and following principles of fusion nuclear science and technology.
