Description:
Derecktor is looking for full time Shipfitter to fabricate and layout metal for building and repairing ships. In this role, you will lay out and fabricate metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and brace them in position within hull of ship for welding. Align parts in relation to each other and install temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates.
- Ability to identify interferences or discrepancies in plans and drawings
- Understand shipyard operation and safety protocol.
- Fitting, setting, and installing fabricated maritime structures.
- Cutting and welding with a variety of processes.
- Metal forming, bending, finishing, and rigging.
- Ability to weld, repair, design, and layout plate or pipe materials.
- Lay out and fabricate metal structural parts, such as bulkheads, and frames; and brace them in position within hull for riveting or welding.
- Lay out position of parts on metals, working from blueprints or templates, and using scribe and hand tools.
- Install packing, gasket, liner, and structural accessories and members such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.
- May prepare molds and templates for fabrication of non-standard parts.
- May roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts using shop machinery; such as plate roll, presses, bending brakes, and joggle machine.
Example Projects:
- Sheet metal fabrication shop work.
- Assemble structural piece parts.
- Installing structure outside on the ship.
- Cutting and washing panels.
- Reinstalling flat bars, welding the new piece installed.
- Laying out for fitting and welding.
- Installing frame, T-bean, flat bars.
- Fabricates foundations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong mechanical and mathematical aptitude.
- Adapt to changes quickly and seamlessly.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to work efficiently in all types of weather conditions.
- Knowledge of blueprints, welding symbols, piping components, and field welding techniques.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven track record of successfully leading and delivering complex projects from start to finish, on time and within budget.
- Strong understanding of shipyard operations, welding, metals fabrication, machining, etc.
Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 8 years of experience in shipfitting.
- Certificate in welding, metals fabrication, machining, etc.
Work Environment Summary:
- Applicant may be subject to environmental conditions such as cold, heat, exposure to noise, and hazards. Applicant must be able to access all areas of the shipyard and company property including docks in all types of weather conditions. Shipyard work is often noisy and dirty.
Physical Demands:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit/stand, walk, climb, kneel, crawl, use hands or fingers, talk, hear, see with close vision, and access confined spaces.
- Enter and move through manholes to reach and work in internally confined spaces.
- Manipulate and transport loads of up to 50 pounds over distances of up to 200 feet, approximately 1 to 6 times during each 8 hour shift.
- Manipulate and operate all machines and hand/power tools essential to the performance of the position of Shipfitter.
- Traverse gangways and scaffolding at varying heights.
- Traverse and negotiate uneven heights between dock and vessel.
- Traverse and negotiate uneven surfaces.
- Ascend and work at heights.
- Stooping, squatting, twisting, pulling and pushing.
