What are the responsibilities and job description for the Train Driver position at Detroit Zoological Society?
The Train Driver, under general supervision, operates the zoological park fixed track railroad train; inspects, services, and makes minor repairs to the train, equipment and track; assists with care, maintenance, and repair of various vehicles, fixtures, and structures; and performs related work as required.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Subject to both specific and general assignments and inspection of work during process and upon completion, but with responsibility for safe and efficient operation and maintenance, operates vehicles including, a small-gauge railroad train and associated gates and communication equipment, trams, and other vehicles taking into account weather conditions and passenger safety.
- Monitors engine status gauges and communication devices.
- As necessary, assists in loading and unloading of passengers and ensures observation of safety procedures.
- Visually and physically inspects the condition of railroad tracks, signal systems, roadways, etc.
- Replaces track, lubricates rail connection plates, spikes and bolts.
- Monitors brake air tanks and checks for condensation.
- Inspects engine crossbars, passenger car connections, brake airlines, and safety equipment.
- As necessary, drives other vehicles to deliver parts and personnel.
- Washes and paints trains, trams, and other vehicles.
- Does minor maintenance tasks and repairs as required throughout the facility.
- May be required from time to time to assist in miscellaneous duties such as clean-up of buildings and grounds, and other related duties as determined by supervision / management.
- Such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Completion of High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience in operating special purpose vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must possess a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License with Chauffeur endorsement and a safe driving record.
- Knowledge of mechanical work, tools, and equipment.
- Ability to perform both routine mechanical maintenance and minor emergency repairs to vehicle and equipment.
- Familiarity with departmental rules and procedures governing train operations.
- Knowledge of applicable safety procedures.
- Physical agility, good hand/eye coordination.
- Tact and diplomacy in dealing with the public.
- Physically and mentally capable of performing all the duties of the position to which assigned.
Working Conditions
Work under conditions including adverse weather, outside environment and heights. Exposure to exhaust, high temperatures, and loud engine noise. Working conditions include a flexible schedule that would involve night and weekend work.
Physical Requirements
Physical work is a primary part of the job: walking, standing, stooping, kneeling and bending for long periods; must be able to lift at least 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
