What are the responsibilities and job description for the Forestry Technician position at Diné Development Corporation?
DDC 4C is seeking a Forestry Technician to join their growing team.
Duties & responsibilities:
- Maintenance duties include but are not limited to; rare plant sign inspection and replacement, prescribed burning, fuel reduction, erosion control, habitat improvement, reforestation, herbicide application and chainsaw operation for timber stand improvement. Employee may assist the Forestry Branch with burning activities and ensure the protection of all Red Cockaded Woodpecker (RCW) trees within the burn areas. Other duties might include data entry, GPS navigation, training, planting, weed-eating, mowing, and possible equipment operation (tractor, bobcat, dozer, back-hoe, and skid-steer unit.
Working conditions:
- Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, all work is performed outdoors which may be hot, cold, wet or humid. Occasionally exposed to loud noises from equipment which may require the use of hearing protection.
Competencies required:
- Must be able to read maps and aerial photos to locate sites and traverse through forest areas.
Skills required:
- Must have good oral communication skills, demonstrate motivation, and be a self-starter with the ability to make sound decisions and act decisively under stress.
Technical skills required:
- The ability to prepare written routine reports with general knowledge of computers utilizing Outlook, Excel, and Microsoft Word.
- Ability to pass a government background check for base access
Qualifications/Certifications:
- Must obtain burning certificates and herbicide license within two months of being hired.
- Candidate must have a valid state driver’s license
Physical requirements:
- Regularly lift 5 pounds and correctly lift up to 50 pounds.
- Physically able to conduct forestry field work utilizing hand tools, rakes, backpack sprayers, brush saws, and chainsaws for 8hrs work day.
- Strenuous and requires a high-energy person, walking over rough terrain, and traveling to/from remote forest jobsites
