Texas Orthopedic Bone, Joint & Sports Medicine PA Residency Program
Background
The TOBJSM residency program was created by Direct Orthopedic Care (DOC) to develop the clinical and business skills of physician assistants in order to build a thriving nonoperative orthopedic surgery practice. Located in Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex, the program welcomes those that wish to practice at that top of their license in fully autonomous environments to provide care to those who need management of both acute and chronic orthopedic conditions.
Purpose and Goals:
The goal of the TOBJSM training is to educate our trainees, so they are comfortable and effective orthopedic specialists. You will be able to act independently and build a practice, have sound clinical judgement, and be able to perform procedures including fracture reduction and injections. You will work in a supportive team environment with orthopedic surgeon supervision.
Program Goals and Objectives

  • Excellent and appropriate patient care is priority – always.
  • Optimize efficiency in the management of patient injuries in both clinic and operating suites. Assist in the development of patient care ‘processes’ and ‘protocols’ that maximizes each patient’s timely recovery.
  • Work as a team with physicians, fellow PAs, therapists, nurses, medical assistants, radiologic and surgical techs, and all other ancillary staff. All play a role, and all are important to the eventual outcome of the patient.
  • Upon completion, the PA resident will have an in-depth understanding of multiple subspecialties within orthopedics, demonstrate highly effective physical exam skills, critical thinking, decision making, and operative techniques including first assist.
  • Retain highly qualified and educated PAs who wish to continue enhancing their skills and education with Direct Orthopedic Care clinics.
  • Develop the healthcare business skills required to independently practice in nonoperative orthopedics.

Curriculum
Our program will consist of a 12-month integrated didactic and clinical curriculum. Our didactics will be based around the NCCPA orthopedic certificate of added qualification (CAQ) blueprint. An in-depth orientation and computer/ EMR training will occur during the first week of the program prior to initiating any patient care or didactic work.

Ideal Candidate*
The Texas Orthopedic Bone, Joint & Sports medicine PA Residency Program is seeking highly energetic physician assistants who are passionate about orthopedics and looking to improve their clinical skills in addition their knowledge on how to build a successful nonoperative orthopedic surgical practice. While this opportunity will expose the residents to the operating room, first assisting, and perioperative care of orthopedic patient, the main focus will be on nonoperative orthopedics.
Admissions
We will be accepting 2 PA fellows per year. Our program accepts applications on a rolling basis until the positions are filled. The program start date will depend on applicant’s graduation from PA school. An interview will be awarded based on evaluation of the applicants CV, educational transcripts, personal statements, and letters of recommendation. PA residents who are accepted must apply for a Texas License.
Requirements

  • Graduate from an ARC-PA accredited physician assistant program
  • NCCPA certified (may apply and interview if eligible)
  • Transcripts from the physician assistant program
  • 2 letters of recommendation
  • Current CV
  • Personal statement
  • Texas PA license (or pending application)
