Independent Living Advocate
The Disabilities Network of Eastern CT, Inc. (DNEC), a non-profit agency located in Norwich, CT provides services to people with disabilities that reside in Eastern Connecticut. The Advocate is responsible for creating, providing, and coordinating services that uphold the rights of individuals with disabilities, empowering them to live independently and advocate for changes that promote their inclusion in the community. Additionally, the Advocate offers support and serves as a liaison between families, staff, and the community.
Essential Functions:
As part of this role, you’ll be expected to perform the following essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation, following the necessary training and supervision:
· Meet with individuals with disabilities (consumers) to assess and understand their needs.
· Inform consumers about various programs and assist them in applying for or maintaining appropriate benefits and resources, such as vocational rehabilitation, social services, Medicare, and more.
· Coordinate and/or provide independent living skills training, peer counseling, and advocacy.
· Assist consumers in developing an Independent Living Plan (ILP) and document the development and achievement of their selected IL goals.
· Maintain a working knowledge of community resources and local agencies.
· Collaborate with consumers, the community, and local agencies to increase awareness of Independent Living Center (ILC) services.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Strong commitment to the philosophy of self-determination for all individuals, including those with disabilities.
· Personal experience with disabilities and/or knowledge of disability culture and etiquette.
· Adequate computer skills with Microsoft Office products and the ability to learn new software and databases.
· Strong organizational skills to efficiently manage duties, including scheduling visits with consumers and staying on top of documentation requirements.
· Proficient communication and organizational skills.
· Self-starter with the motivation to work independently and stay on task.
· Ability to work well in a team, accept supervision, and maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.
· Comfort in reaching out to consumers directly and scheduling home or other visits within New London County and Windham County.
· Reliable transportation, including a valid driver's license and proof of auto insurance.
· Willingness to submit to random drug and alcohol testing.
· Willingness to obtain First Aid, CPR, AIRS, and any other required training.
No history of felony or serious criminal convictions.
