Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or related field with demonstrated experience in case management, individual and systems advocacy, substance abuse, trauma-informed care and gender based violence preferred.

Accountability: Accountable to Residential Services Director

Introductory Period: 90 days

Subordinates: Not a supervisory position

Areas of Responsibility:

  • To manage shelter during designated hours.
  • To help clients adjust to group/shared family living while being responsible for their safety and well-being.
  • Responsible for providing residents with assistance related to housing, financial and vocational needs, alcohol and drug treatment services, and other desired supportive services.
  • Create and maintain a safe, caring and respectful environment for shelter residents.
  • To remain calm during crisis situations and multitask and prioritize efficiently.

Duties:

Maintain confidentiality as required by all funding sources.

Monitor compliance with all safety guidelines for shelter. Maintain a positive attitude toward obligations of job and interactions with shelter residents.

Conduct safety planning with callers and residents over crisis hotline, during shelter intake and as needed.

Conduct intakes of new residents, orient new residents to shelter, and facilitate departure interviews with residents as needed.

Document information regarding client progress, incidents, maintenance needs and concerns.

Make necessary referrals to legal advocate and DV peer support specialist when necessary.

Act as liaison with the Coleman Crisis Intervention and Recovery Center.

Contact Chain of Command as directed for major unusual incidents.

Staff will be expected to respond to incoming calls, included but not limited to: safety and security concerns for clients, staff or facilities; maintenance issues, discussing potential shelter intakes, debriefing staff after crucial incidents; staff call offs; staff illness or related urgent concerns. Staff will be required to maintain a current copy of DVPI staff contact information and other pertinent emergency information as provided by administrative staff.

Answer incoming calls on 24 hour hotline, provide crisis intervention, safety planning, perform initial shelter assessment and provide appropriate referrals. This may include but is not limited to coordinating with DVPI’s Western Stark Emergency Shelter, Coleman Crisis Intervention and Recovery Center, or related programs. Document calls and complete tracking information as needed.

Accurately and thoroughly document shelter activity on shift report and service activity log.

Perform routine shelter maintenance, cleaning tasks and laundry as needed.

Provide transportation as needed.

Contribute to overall program evaluation and planning by attending and contributing at staff meetings and client case reviews.

Provide childcare services to clients of DVPI as needed.

Assist with data entry tasks and reporting requirements as needed.

Attend staff meetings, in-service trainings, and attend related professional training and activities as directed by the Residential Services Director.

Complete mandatory 40 hour DVPI training on domestic violence.

Conduct comprehensive case management services for shelter residents and advocate on behalf of client.

Facilitate, contact and provide referrals as needed to appropriate community resources.

Provide on call support to shelter staff for consultation and to ensure continuation of services. Rotate weekend on call support with other System Advocates and Residential Services Director.

Conduct security checks of all doors and windows, and, when applicable, implement emergency procedures.

Monitor security equipment and respond swiftly and accurately to alarms and safety concerns. Implement emergency protocol as needed.

Represent DVPI at community and collaborative meetings as requested, advocate on behalf of survivors and facilitate positive change.

Prepare and facilitate Empower Hour and life skills support groups weekly as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Residential Services Director to ensure continued quality services to the clients of DVPI and to the community.

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to handle stress, deadlines, and interact with a wide array of personalities.
  • Ability to use telephone
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds without assistance
  • Dexterity and ability to use keyboard and mouse
  • Ability to view computer monitor
  • Occasional bending, lifting, pulling, pushing and walking
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle (valid driver’s license and appropriate auto insurance coverage)
