What are the responsibilities and job description for the COURTROOM SUPPORT SPECIALIST III position at Dorchester County?

The purpose of the class is to perform a variety of moderately complex clerical work in the preparation and maintenance of Family Court department records, to perform a variety of clerical tasks as assigned, and to provide professional and courteous customer service at all times. The class is given a general outline of work to be performed and is free to develop work methods and sequences; work is reviewed periodically by supervisor.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Prepares, processes, copies, indexes, files, transmits and/or maintains various departmental documents.
  • Audits and ensures the security and confidentiality of files as appropriate.
  • Maintains records, prepares forms, verifies information and resolves moderately complex problems.
  • Required to attend courtroom proceedings on behalf of the Clerk of Court during terms of court  
  • Produce accurate records for the Judge that directly impact the Court.
  • Must act as the lead to ensure Court proceedings run efficiently.  
  • Must perform difficult and complex duties such as reviewing legal files for scheduling of hearings, prepare and generate legal documents and distribute to constables and/or the Sheriff’s Department for proper service upon the parties
  •  Must use extreme judgement and discretion to investigate problems that could affect the Court’s decision and ensure issues are resolved as to not to improperly issue a bench warrant
  • Must have substantial knowledge of legal procedures, documents and terminology used in the courtroom setting
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and rules and regulations concerning enforcement of court Orders relating to alimony and child support
  • Prepares and generates legal documents; distributes documents to constables and/or various counties for proper service. 
  • Prepares and determines to issue a Rules to Show Cause to the non-custodial parent due to non-compliance of child support case; issues bench warrants; and generates the Order/Notice to withhold wages and mails notices to employers for processing
  • Performs duties relating to cash bonds posting procedures; makes decisions to release inmates from the detention center.
  • Prepares correspondence, memoranda, reports, etc. 
  • Collects fines, fees, and payments; and issues receipts.
  • Performs complex calculations related to child support and enters information on the Family Court case management system.
  • Communicates, interacts and provides effective assistance to attorneys, judges, court personnel, law enforcement, other county and state employees, and the public. 
  • Types letters, memos, and other correspondents for the appropriate office or department. 
  • Examines documents created by support staff for accuracy.
  • Purchases and maintains office inventory levels such as paper, pens, toner, etc.
  • Schedules and maintains calendar of appointments, meetings and travel itineraries and coordinates related arrangements. 
  • Resolves moderately complex issues regarding departmental operations.
  • May prepare and distribute minutes of meetings.
  • May tabulate, post, and verify information as requested.
  • May assist in departmental budgeting, monitoring of grants and or departmental financials.
  • May attend and represent the organization at internal and external meetings.
  • Assists co-workers with clerical duties as necessary.
  • Operates a personal computer and appropriate software packages or its equivalent pertaining to departmental activities.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned. 
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED supplemented by education in accounting, bookkeeping, secretarial science or a closely related field.
Requires at least four (4) years of related work experience.
Special Qualifications:
May require special certifications as required by the Department Head.

Salary : $40,131 - $44,144
