Job Summary
This is semi-skilled work in operating heavy equipment or operating a tandem axle dump truck. Job duties vary for each employee based on equipment or vehicle assignment. Duties of an Equipment Operator I or laborer may be performed as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Operating a backhoe, pan, bulldozer, motor grader, or other equipment while digging, clearing, grading, grubbing, backfilling, and preparing road base on a job site
- Operating a chipper or other heavy equipment on a paving crew; operating pothole patcher
- Operating a tandem axle dump truck in hauling sand, dirt, gravel, and other materials to the job site; spreading sand, dirt, and gravel at work site
- Operating buffing machine to clean and wax floors of county facilities
- Collecting and disposing of solid waste from county ball fields and recreational facilities
- Operating tractor with bush hog or long arm to mow or till county rights-of-way and recreational fields; using a push mower or weed eater to mow areas inaccessible to bush hog
- Landscaping parks and recreational fields; planting grass, shrubs, flowers, and trees; and cutting trees and laying mulch and sod
- Repairing, replacing, painting, and constructing fences, scoreboards, field houses, and other recreational apparatus as needed
- Checking and cleaning assigned equipment on a regular basis and performing basic preventative maintenance in checking and refilling fluids, et cetera
- May assist crew leader or supervisor in estimating amount and type of materials, tools, and supplies needed at the job site
- May perform flagging duties for traffic control on a job site
- May perform duties of an Equipment Operator I or Laborer as needed
- Performing emergency call-back duty as required
- Job duties vary for each employee depending on crew or work assignment
- Performing other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED, supplemented by college-level or vocational course work in related field
- Three years professional related work experience
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 21 years of age or older
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR)
- Possession of a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (Class B), if assigned to drive vehicles requiring this license
- National Safety Council Flagging certified, or certification within six months of employment
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of or ability to learn county and department operations, ordinances, policies, procedures, terminology, and materials as they relate to assignment
- Knowledge of building, maintenance, and construction principles, techniques, guidelines, practices, and equipment as related to assignment; grading, construction, paving
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the safe operation of equipment, tools, machinery, and vehicles as required by assignment
- Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of all department equipment, tools, machinery, and vehicles as required by assignment
- Knowledge of specialized software, machinery, materials, terminology, and/or forms essential to the assignment
- Skill in handling and operating all assigned equipment, tools, and/or vehicles in a safe and proficient manner
- Skill in performing tasks which require attention to detail, and completing assigned jobs efficiently and correctly
- Ability to apply common sense to understand, follow, and complete verbal and written instructions
- Ability to communicate and interact clearly and effectively with all those contacted in the course of work in a professional and courteous manner, both orally and in writing; establishing and maintaining effective, professional, and cordial working relationships
- Ability to read and comprehend routine instructions, short correspondence and memos
- Ability and willingness to meet physical requirements and perform labor (including lifting and carrying heavy objects) outdoors, while working in and adjacent to the roadway for extended periods of time
- Ability and willingness to work with and assist other laborers to complete assigned project

- Ability to work independently in the absence of specific instructions or direct supervision
Salary: $37,384.67 annually, ($17.9734 hourly) plus full benefits package
