SUMMARY:  The position of Athletic Trainer is to practice the prevention, care and rehabilitation of injuries incurred through athletic participation with the use of physical modalities.  Under basic supervision, collaborates with physicians to optimize student athlete activity and participation in athletics. Works to create a safe playing environment for students by monitoring and controlling environmental risks. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Administer a program to provide for emergency care, treatment, and rehabilitation of injured high school athletes in compliance with National Athletic Trainers’ Association guidelines:
  1. a) Prevention of athletic injuries and/or illnesses
  2. b) Evaluation and recognition of athletic injuries or illnesses.
  3. c) First aid and emergency care and weekday practices
  4. d) Be on-site for all home games and weekday practices
  5. e) Travel to all varsity football games and regional and state tournament games in all sports, as scheduled by the campus athletic director
  • In conjunction with the coach(es), the certified athletic trainer will follow the developed guidelines and emergency care procedure procedures:
  1. a) Assist the head coach in developing an emergency medical plan for each sport
  2. b) Counsel athletes and their parents in seeking proper medical assistance for follow-up care and/or surgery
  3. c) Work under the direction of the team physician or other cooperating physician with respect to athletes’ treatment goals
  4. d) Advise the coach when an athlete may return and to what extent participation in practice or games following injury or illness
  5. e) Maintain records on athletic injuries, physician referrals, and treatments administered.
  • Assist and advise the Physical Education/Health and coaching staff regarding injury prevention, conditioning programs, and the selection, care and fitting of protective equipment
  1. a) Conduct in-service programs for the coaching staff in the care and prevention of athletic injuries
    b) Initiate and administer a student trainer program. It should include instructions and supervision in first aid techniques, protective taping , wraps and dressings, and use of theraputic modalilties.
  • Be responsible for the organization, inventory, and requisition of all training room supplies. Submit annual budget for all first aid and medical supply needs for the year
  • Supervises the utilization of the facilities and equipment needed by the students and staff for any rehabilitation or treatment of athletic related injuries.
  • Meet re-certification standards as established by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association
  • Responsible for recruiting, training and supervising student trainers.  Schedules student trainers for athletic competitions (both home and away) and practices.
  • Provides classroom coverage in case of campus declared emergency
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Skill in BLS/CPR and First Aid techniques
  • Arizona Interscholastic Association Bylaws
  • National Athletic Trainers Association rules, regulations, and code of ethics
  • District and Department policies and procedures
  • Assessing, identifying, and treating various athletic injuries
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with coworkers and other individuals in contact during the course of work; communicating clearly and concisely
  • Coordinating and directing athletic events
  • Practicing methods involved in providing quality customer service

 

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS/EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training; AND 750 hours of clinical rotations; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • Valid teaching certificate, preferred
  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License

 

Required License and Certification:

  • Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Arizona Athletic Trainer Certification

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls, use a keyboard or keypad. The employee occasionally is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk, bend and sit, and is occasionally required to stoop or kneel. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to ten pounds and occasionally lift and/or move over twenty-five pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.  May involve occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds or lifting student athletes.
