HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELOR

Classification 

Non-Exempt, 10-Month Employee

Reports to 

Director of Culture and School Counseling 

Primary Function

Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health & Science Charter School is seeking a certified/licensed school counselor who seeks to improve student outcomes.  Under the general supervision of the Director of School Counseling, the school counselor works with students to develop and implement plans around academic and social-emotional success. School counselors work with the school community, including scholars, families, staff, and school leadership to advocate for programs and services that positively impact scholar academic success in alignment with New York State Learning Standards, social-emotional development, and higher education and career readiness. The framework for the delivery of school counseling practices and services is guided by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and the New York State (NYSSCA) Comprehensive Counseling Models and the American School Counselor Association’s Ethical Standards.

Desired Education and Experience

  • Master in School Counseling from an accredited institution
  • New York State certification
  • At least 3 to 5 years of demonstrated success working in urban school settings, preferably HS level
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Bilingual Spanish/English a plus
  • Willingness to learn and grow professionally

Essential Functions & Accountabilities:

  • Identify behavioral problems or at-risk students and act appropriately
  • Supports student success through study and test-taking skills
  • Contributes to improving student attendance
  • Ensures students receive Academic Intervention Services (AIS)
  • Ensures students and families have knowledge of and access to promotion and graduation requirements
  • Focuses on increased graduation rates
  • Uses data-informed practice to increase opportunity and promote achievement
  • Supports teachers in their work with students
  • Focuses on reducing disciplinary referrals and suspension rates
  • Pay attention to cultural or societal differences in dealing with the students
  • Helps students acquire resiliency skills
  • Promotes successful student transition from grade level to grade level
  • Teaches students mediation and conflict resolution
  • Facilitates access to community resources
  • Encourages positive motivation and aspiration

Career/Post-Secondary Development:

  • Helps students explore post-secondary options including college and career choices
  • Facilitates the college application process
  • Engages parents in educational and career planning for their children
  • Helps parents to navigate the school’s role in the educational process
  • Provides skills necessary for student success in school, community, and the world of work
  • Connects career goals to educational goals
  • Act as a resource to students in advising and coordinating with students on their academic plans and trajectories.
  • Coordinate events, curriculum, internships, and service-learning for students’ post-secondary plans
  • Plan and lead workshops for parents on key topics (financial aid planning, different types of institutions, scholarships, etc. ) related to the college admissions process and career options.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work 

This is a full-time 10-month position.  The regular hours and workdays are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm in addition to any special events to which all staff are expected to attend.

Salary Range

$65,000 - $95,000  Annually (Based on Experience)

Travel 

Minimum to no travel required
