Legal Director

Drivers Union is one of the first organizations in the nation to establish a legislative and legal framework that gives gig workers a true and legitimate voice in their work lives—regardless of employment status. Drivers Union is seeking a Legal Director to lead and supervise a growing team of attorneys and paralegals representing gig workers in arbitration and legal proceedings. The Legal Director will play a critical role in shaping legal strategy, mentoring staff attorneys and paralegals, and ensuring high-quality, worker-centered legal advocacy.

Primary Responsibilities

• Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and performance management for a team of Staff Attorneys, Paralegals, and other legal staff.
• Oversee legal strategy and case management for deactivation disputes, arbitration proceedings, and related litigation.
• Review and provide guidance on investigations, legal research, pleadings, memoranda, and case presentations.
• Ensure consistent, high-quality legal advocacy aligned with Drivers Union’s mission and values.
• Carry a limited caseload, as needed, including representing drivers in complex or high-impact matters.
• Collaborate with executive leadership, organizers, and policy staff to align legal work with broader advocacy and legislative goals.
• Help maintain a positive, respectful, welcoming, professional, and culturally competent work environment across the organization.
• Support development of internal legal systems, policies, training, and best practices.
• As part of a leadership team, provide insight and counsel as appropriate and otherwise contribute to the overall strength and success of the organization and its mission.

Qualifications

• Admission to the Washington State Bar, or ability to obtain admission.
• Significant experience practicing labor, employment, workers’ rights, public defense, and/or related areas of law.
• Demonstrated experience supervising, mentoring, or leading attorneys or legal teams.
• Strong judgment and ability to develop legal strategy, manage complex cases, and guide others through litigation and arbitration.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and navigate high-pressure situations.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience negotiating with third parties.
• Experience representing or working with immigrants, low-wage workers, and other vulnerable or marginalized communities.

Particular consideration will be given to candidates with fluency in languages other than English and those with demonstrated leadership within the region’s diverse immigrant and refugee communities.

Pay: $130,000.00 - $165,000.00 per year
