Shelter Support Specialist

Summary

Under the supervision of the Shelter Program Coordinator, addresses the needs of domestic violence survivors in an emergency shelter setting using trauma informed best practices. This may include but is not limited to crisis advocacy and maintaining the general safety and well-being of shelter and all residents. The Shelter Support Specialist is responsible for communicating, overseeing, and upholding all shelter policies and guidelines and facilitating the day-to-day structure of the Monika’s House program. This position answers the DVRC crisis line and the Monika’s House business line. While on shift the Shelter Support Specialist is responsible for responding to crisis situation with clients or the shelter. Duties may vary by time of shift (e.g. overnight vs. day).

Responsibilities

· Ability to work with and assist clients regardless of sex, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age and/or disability.

· Conduct Safety Checksto maintain cleanliness, security, and safety of residents.

· Addresses participant needs daily including information, advocacy, emotional support, and safety planning.

· Answer crisis and business lines and ensure that all relevant data is entered into Osnium in a timely manner.

· Assist with childcare to support client self-sufficiency.

· Ensure that all pertinent client data is entered into Osnium on a regular basis.

· Maintain a clean office and staff bathroom. Assist with house laundry if needed. Clean and prepare any rooms/beds that have been exited.

· Complete the Fridge and Freezer Temperature Log.

· Ensure weekly communal chores are being completed, sign off on completed chores.

· Order food boxes as needed for clients and pick up Oregon Food Bank orders.

· Complete nightly securing of shelter and morning opening of shelter including gate, alarm and office door.

· Support organizational activities: assemble client welcome folders and files, print and file forms, packets, and binders; ensure supply of all forms, update client sign-up sheets, and keep all signs in the house updated and bilingual.

· Communicate and enforce guidelines and policies, providing verbal and written warnings as appropriate, providing positive feedback and documenting interactions with clients. Model appropriate boundaries with clients and demonstrate respect for client decision making.

· Maintain a positive working relationship with the shelter team.

· Fill Client Hygiene Requests and restockhouse cleaning supplies as needed.

· Follow all agency policies and VAWA and HIPPA compliant-policies related to sharing client information with law enforcement, DHS, courts or other agencies with whom the client is actively involved.

· Respond to crises and/or be available for client check-ins while on shift. Consult with either the Shelter Program Coordinator or the Housing Director as needed to resolve crisis, and provide consultation for other staff.

· Driving on behalf of agency business is required.

· Transports participants and/or their belongings, as needed and appropriate.

· Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

· Passion for the Domestic Violence Resource Center’s mission. A shared commitment to social change, equity, inclusion, and building a future free from violence and oppression.

· Must pass a criminal background check.

· Must complete the 40-hour Victims’ Advocacy Training, as required by the State of Oregon, within 30 days of employment, or as soon as reasonable.

· Adhere to DVRC policies and procedures.

· May be asked to represent DVRC at public events, meetings, services, clubs, etc.

· Minimum of two years post high school education or relevant work experience.

· Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

· CPR/1st aide certified within 90 days of employment.

· Ability to consistently and effectively model appropriate behavior skills and boundaries to both adults and children.

· Experience working with people in crisis situations (previous work or experience with survivors of abuse is preferred).

· Time management skills and ability to work independently and with a team.

· Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, volunteers, and clients.

· Ability to relate effectively and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds and of all ages; to promote a culturally diverse, inclusive, and anti-racist environment; and to imbed equitable and trauma-informed practices in all aspects of one’s role.

· Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication, and organizational skills.

· Ability to use mature judgement in decision-making or conflict resolution with adult and children and in dealing with uncomfortable situations and conversations.

· Ability to maintain a calm and positive demeanor under stress, while resolving conflicts, and in our community living environment.

· Ability to use technology necessary for day-to-day functions in a business environment including databases, Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, etc., and Internet technology as work may be required to be completed remotely as needed.

· Must have an Oregon Driver License with minimum 3 years of driving experience and a clean driving record.

Working Conditions:

· Work environment is in a home-like setting that has natural and artificial lighting. May be exposed to cleaning solvents, bloodborne pathogens, and animals. Position requires frequent use of steps, repetitive motion with keyboard and use of computer mouse. Property has a hilly driveway and caution is advised during rainy, icy, and or snowy conditions. May require driving on a regular basis. Overtime may be required.
