Job Summary
We are seeking dedicated, adaptable Substitute School Nurses to provide essential nursing care and support in our educational environment. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in various healthcare settings, including hospital medicine, emergency medicine, and outpatient clinics. This role involves delivering quality patient care, managing medical emergencies, and ensuring student health needs are met efficiently and compassionately. The Substitute School Nurse will play a vital role in maintaining a safe and healthy school environment by applying their extensive clinical experience and nursing expertise.

Duties

  • Administer medications, injections, and treatments following physician orders and school policies.
  • Assess students' health status by monitoring vital signs, conducting physical assessments, and evaluating symptoms.
  • Respond promptly to medical emergencies, utilizing skills in emergency medicine, trauma care, and first aid.
  • Maintain accurate medical documentation using EMR/EHR systems, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Provide basic life support (BLS) and perform IV insertions when necessary.
  • Collaborate with school staff to develop individualized health plans for students with special needs or chronic conditions.
  • Manage infectious disease protocols and ensure proper sanitation practices within the school setting.
  • Educate students on health topics such as hygiene, nutrition, and injury prevention.
  • Keep detailed records of student visits, treatments administered, and health assessments performed.
  • Coordinate with healthcare providers for follow-up care or specialist consultations when required.

Requirements

  • Valid nursing license with current registration; experience in Level II trauma centers or Level I Trauma Centers preferred.
  • Experience using SNAP Health Center and PowerSchool strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in hospital medicine, emergency room settings, or urgent care environments.
  • Prior school nursing experience is highly desirable; experience in PICU, Geriatrics, or post-acute care is a plus.
  • Proficiency with EMR/EHR systems and medical documentation standards.
  • Strong knowledge of physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, and medical terminology.
  • Ability to perform venipuncture, IV insertions, injections, and medication administration accurately.
  • Excellent patient assessment skills combined with the ability to respond effectively during emergencies.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations to ensure confidentiality of student health information.
  • Basic life support (BLS) certification required; additional certifications in pediatric advanced life support (PALS) or trauma care are advantageous.
  • Experience working with diverse populations across outpatient clinics or inpatient settings is preferred. This position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in students’ lives while utilizing extensive clinical expertise in a dynamic educational environment.

Pay: From $38.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 20 per week
