Summary

East Side House (ESH), founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. ESH has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement. Its youth education and technology programs teach skills to allow its students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource, the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve.

 

ESHs Youth After-School Academy is a literacy-focused after-school program for grades 6 through 8 from high-poverty communities in Bronx, NY. ESH-managed After School Programs offers students additional learning time in a fun, engaging, and safe environment. Students are offered a wide variety of activities, including homework help, robotics, team sports, karate, dance, and music. In addition, educational methods are used to build and reinforce the skills needed to reach New York State standards for promotion and graduation.

At ESH, the Education Specialist will be a part of a team responsible for guiding the design and implementation of instructional programming for Middle Schools. The Education Specialist will facilitate the development and execution of academic interventions and learning strategies to support the individual learning strengths of our diverse population of learners

 

Primary Functions

Duties and Responsibilities shall include but are not limited to the following:

  • Under the supervision of the Department Director, with guidance from the Program Director, assist Group Leaders and Activity Specialist with planning and implementation of engaging, standards-aligned units, lesson plans, and projects
  • Must have a strong understanding of the schools culture, needs and has experience with curriculum implementation
  • Consult with the Program Director regarding thematic frameworks, implementation of curricula, and strategies for supporting a deeper understanding of the principles of youth development in front line workers
  • Forge relationships with school personnel to ensure that curriculum and instruction meet the needs of a diverse population of learners are aligned with STEAM, Common Core State Standards, and meets contractual expectations and benchmarks
  • Work in collaboration with the Program Director to monitor program data, consult on program improvement, and support ongoing communication with school leadership
  • Meet with Program Director for planning, consultation, and staff development ideas monthly.
  • Provide ongoing instructional and curriculum development support for staff and interns by conducting observations, on-site coaching, and resource development
  • Must design assessment and goal-setting instruments and oversee staff and interns through the implementation of these processes quarterly.
  • Assist Program Director with training and professional development workshops
  • Must demonstrate an understanding and practices of the principle of positive youth development
  • Attend relevant meetings, trainings, workshops, outside events, and organization-wide activities as required and as appointed by the Department Director
  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of children in the program by providing close supervision during activities
  • Provide fun, innovative age-appropriate program activities and develop lesson plans to be conducted by Group Leaders
  • Establish a positive working relationship with staff, parents, and participants by communicating effectively

Expected Work Schedule

This part-time position is seasonal, working up to 20 hours a week. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. Workdays/hours are subject to change based on ESHs needs.

 

Required Clearances

  • Department of Health Fingerprint Clearance
  • Department of Health Medical Clearance
  • Department of Education Fingerprint Clearance
  • State Central Registry (SCR) Clearance ($25.00 fee)
  • Staff Exclusion List (SEL) Clearance
  • Proof of being vaccinated against COVID-19 (At least one shot of a two-dose or the single shot covid vaccination series to be cleared for hire. All employees are required to be fully vaccinated by October 12, 2021)

 

Required Online Training

  • Mandated Reporter, 2 hours, https://www.hslcnys.org/hslc/
  • Foundations of Health & Safety Training, 5 hours, https://www.ecetp.pdp.albany.edu

 

Supervisory Responsibility

They are responsible for gathering lesson plans with staff and conducting observations.

 

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional school environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is generally a sedentary role; however, some filing and site visits are required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary. Required Skills/Experience

  • Minimum Bachelors Degree required,
  • Masters in education preferred
  • Three (3) years of experience in the field of education, preferably including a combination of classroom teaching and administrative experience, in both school and out of school time settings
  • Demonstrated record in achieving results with low-income, urban adolescents
  • Familiarity with research-based approaches to hands-on, experiential, community-based, and project-based learning models, differentiated instruction, mixedskill and age groupings, culturally relevant teaching practices, formative assessment techniques, and working with English Language and students who are striving learners
  • Strong knowledge of the academic and social needs of youth who are both in and out of school
  • Ability to participate as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Understanding of and ability to meet performance-based outcomes
  • Ability to adapt quickly to change and work within a results-orientated environment
  • Knowledge of classroom management.
  • Knowledge and ability to use computers and related technology efficiently
