What are the responsibilities and job description for the Social-Emotional Learning Coordinator position at Easter Seals Southeast WI?

The Social-Emotional Learning Coordinator is responsible for advancing staff performance and providing individualized support for children and staff through the lens of social-emotional development across seasonal camps, summer camp, and afterschool camp.  This role supports program quality through intentional lesson planning, documentation, staff coaching, behavior support, and direct program coverage as needed.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (FUNCTIONS) include the following:  

  • Advance staff knowledge in social-emotional development and how to implement it in real-world situations.
  • Build a positive, caring, and supportive relationship with all staff and campers alike.
  • Conduct program quality assessments including surveys prior to camp and at the end of camp for staff, campers, and family regarding the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program.
  • Develop program goals regarding SEL and a plan to meet those goals alongside program manager.
  • Plan, design, and facilitate trainings specific to SEL for campers and staff that is in alignment with current research.
  • Provide staff tools to remind and implement universal language that aligns with SEL training and creates a supportive environment for campers and counselors alike.
  • Act as a role model for camper-staff interaction.
  • Interacts with participants in a respectful, age-appropriate, and culturally appropriate manner by honoring participant preferences and requests, in conjunction with behavior plans and care information. 
  • Follow-up with leads and counselors daily to be sure of implementation of SEL activities.
    • Works cooperatively with programming team to provide guidance and/or support to both staff and campers, when needed. 
    • Consult via phone or in person during crisis. Communicates with families regarding behaviors and/or behavior plans for camp, alongside Recreation Program Supervisor/Manager.
    • Cleans up spills/bodily fluids, using appropriate infection control procedures.  
    • Ensures the safety of each participant by monitoring activities, maintaining a sanitary, clutter-free environment, pool set-up, monitoring and maintenance (as applicable) and participating in safety training and emergency drills.  
    • Reports suspected abuse, neglect, and exploitation of participants immediately per program and agency policies and procedures. 
    • Employs assistive equipment and practices throughout the day when transporting, lifting, and working with participants. 
    • Plan, develop, and document Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lesson plans and activities for seasonal camps, summer camp, and afterschool camp, ensuring alignment with program goals, character traits independence; confidence, and self-advocacy, and other camper needs. Maintain clear documentation related to lesson plans, SEL implementation, and program outcomes.
    • Provide individualized assistance to participants as needed and encourage character traits such as independence, confidence, and self-advocacy.
    • Attend camper assessments and planning meetings, as needed, to support appropriate placement, supports, and successful participation
    • Provides individualized assistance to participants in programs, as needed. 
    • Acts as an appropriate role model for participants. 
    • Encourages participants to socialize, communicate, and fulfill needs independently. 
    • Redirects participants through positive actions. 
    • Provides quality specialized services while being mindful of resource usage. 
    • Stays abreast of emergency procedures and/or updates for each program scenario to ensure awareness of protocols in the event of an emergency. 
      • Provides interesting and stimulating program activities that are appropriate for most participants, which includes planning the daily schedule of activities in advance, and completing recordkeeping as assigned (attendance, activity schedule, etc.). 
      • Participates in assigned meetings, professional development, and training as required.
    • Providing coverage to all work teams, as needed.  Responsible for communicating updates with other staff and families, as needed. 
    • Performs other duties (or functions) as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  Required:  

  • Coursework or degree in social work, psychology or related field OR previous work experience in social emotional education.
  • TB test required. 
  • A Criminal Background Check must meet the requirements of the State of WI licensure for day programming. 
  • Experience working with children and families of children with social, emotional, behavioral and/or developmental needs.
  • Experience in leading, mentoring and supporting effective, high-quality, child-development services.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation with proof of insurance

 

Preferred: 

  • Current CPR, First Aid, CPI, and/or Universal Precautions training/license. 
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities in a health care or social service setting. 
  • Current or past education in child development or social work or equivalent.

  • Ability to work effectively with other agency staff, family members of those served and the community at large.   
  • Ability to follow directions. 
  • Ability to exercise safe lifting techniques. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality. 
  • Awareness of disability issues. 
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with staff, participants, family and community members, verbally and in writing. 
  • Ability to problem-solve issues. 
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.   
  • Must be organized and able to handle multiple tasks.   
  • Must be honest, reliable, and able to meet deadlines. 
  • Must exercise sound judgment in making decisions and act accordingly.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  • May be required to lift, carry, push or pull up to 50 pounds.  
  • Frequently requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling and reaching. 
  • Perform 1 to 2 person-transfers from chair to toilet and back; from floor to chair and back.   
  • May be required to assist individuals in and out of vehicles. 
  • Will be exposed to loud/noisy environments. 
  • Exposure to outdoor elements.
