What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Probate Register position at Eaton County?
Under the supervision of the Probate Register, performs a variety of tasks related to the processing of estate, guardianship, conservatorship and related probate matters. Set up files, receives, reviews and files legal documents and provides information to attorneys and the public regarding the processing of probate matters. Coordinates mentally ill proceedings and Developmentally Disabled files.
1. Receives, records and files legal documents related to probate proceedings. Reviews documents for accuracy and completeness and enters information on documents to computer system.
2. Provides information to attorneys and the public on the filing of petitions, procedural requirements, prescribed time limits and related probate matters. Assists individuals at the counter with inquiries, filing papers and establishing new estates, guardianships and other matters.
3. Schedules mentally ill hearings and coordinates procedures with hospital mental health units, other probate courts, attorneys and other parties. Follows-up on court orders, continuing hospitalization petitions, and discharges. Arranges transportation with law enforcement agencies as necessary.
4. Assists mental health staff with guardianships for developmentally disabled individuals. Processes all of the Developmentally Disabled files including appointment of guardian, scheduling hearing, noticing parties, and contacting parties regarding case status.
5. Assists in maintaining case files and helps ensure that files are ready for court action as scheduled.
6. Receives guardian reports and account documents and reviews for conformity to statutory requirements. Notices parties when documents are overdue.
7. Researches estate files for requested information.
8. Types orders, discharges and other documents related to probate matters as well as correspondence, file cards and various forms.
9. Assists with filing wills, computing inventory fees and filing fees, receipting fees, and certifying copies and performing related tasks.
10. Performs a variety of related support tasks such as making copies and preparing mailings.
11. Substitutes for the Probate Register and performs such responsibilities as delegated.

Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
Two years experience in a Probate Court, law office dealing with probate matters, or related setting.
