Who we are:
Founded in 1982, El Puente is a youth centered organization that uses the arts and education to advance social and environmental justice. Its mission is to inspire and nurture leadership for peace and justice, working as a human rights institution in NYC and Puerto Rico with national and international impact. El Puente creates community-led movements of self determination through a holistic leadership and membership program model, as a high impact youth and community development organization.
El Puente integrates its activities and community campaigns within its six Youth Leadership Centers, and its nationally recognized public high school, the El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice. Organizing in North Brooklyn, Puerto Rico and beyond, El Puente remains at the forefront of community & youth development, and as such, initiates/impacts social policy locally and nationally.
As a staff member of El Puente, the Communications coordinator is expected to uphold and work within the mission, philosophy and principles of the organization.
Group leaders are asked to help with academic tutoring and to assist lead instructors in preparing students to demonstrate newly acquired skills in STEM, leadership, sports and the arts. Qualified candidates must enjoy working with children and be able to promote positive character development. Previous experience as a group leader is a plus, but not required. Must be able to supervise a group of children and participate in activities and trips; provide and maintain a safe working environment. College Students encouraged to apply!
Primary Job Functions:

Organize, lead, and promote the student’s interest and participation in the activities offered by the program

Provide academic support, homework guidance, assistance, and supervision to students
-
Establish and enforce norms for behavior and procedures for maintaining safety among the members for whom they are responsible
-
He/she fosters an atmosphere of fun and learning and serves as a role model to youth, always conducting him/herself in the utmost professional manner and maintaining appropriate boundaries

Promotes positive character development in all youth
-
Design and implement activities that align with El Puentes mission and principles, that are also relevant to the youth in the centers.
Secondary Job Functions (El Puente):

Attend trainings and monthly staff meetings
-
Submit attendance sheets to the Administrative Coordinator on a daily basis
-
Ensures that participants sign in and out of the activities
-
Be aware of mission of El Puente, goals and requirements of program, and work to ensure they are achieved
-
Assist with recruitment and support retention
Tertiary Job Functions:

Clean and sanitize work space on a consistent basis such as but not limited to:
-
Light Labor, picking up boxes, setting up spaces

Flexibility in location of employment
Usage of Personal hardware such as :

Cellular phone

Tablets

Additionally: Internet connection
Interacts with: Leadership Team, Administrative Coordinator
Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be responsible, reliable and punctual!

Requires strong academic skills in Math and English as well as knowledge of the New York State standards and test preparation
-
We are open on most school holidays so the successful candidate will be someone that is flexible and available to work on such days as needed
-
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required

Well organized, able to work both independently and collaboratively
-
Highschool graduate with some college preferred
-
At least a year of experience in a youth development setting
