Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Division of Student Affairs fosters student growth and development; and aids, directs and informs students about services and programs that will expand students' educational experiences and prepare them for diverse lives in local and global communities. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for many of the outside the classroom / off campus aspects of student life at ECSU, including student engagement and leadership; career services; student disability services, residential life; student activities; community standards; special programs and services; student health & counseling services and career services.
Description of Work
The Executive Director of Student Engagement &Leadership oversees the total operation of the Student Center including student government association, Campus Activities Board, Mister and Miss Elizabeth City State University Royal Court, student engagement / activities, National Pan Hellenic Council (fraternities and sororities) and other student organizations, Viking Voyage Orientation, and Adult Learner Initiatives, while also providing direct oversight of campus recreation activities in Williams Hall and the Game Room / Bowling Center. The Executive Director directs and determines goals, objectives, and the means to achieve these goals by management of services, planning of budgets, and serving on various committees. Responsibilities also include publicizing, reporting, and working with students, alumni, and the public on event planning / special events. This position serves as the primary communication link between the New Student Center and other campus departments and the community. This position will also represent the university as a member of the Association of College Unions International and / or other nationally recognized student affairs' organizations.
Competencies / Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
Possess knowledge of and ability to conduct professional development on contemporary principles of good practices of Student Affairs.
Possess the ability to plan, organize, manage, research and evaluate multiple and complex operations in a timely, efficient manner. Skilled proficiency in communicating effectively, both verbally and written.
Possess sound ethical judgment and excellent decision making skills. Possess knowledge of effective customer service skills and ability to be a good judge of character, especially with young adults and adolescent students.
Possess keen knowledge of human development and the processes of monitoring the delivery of student life development programs.
Possess the ability to affirmatively model effective leadership, good moral character and ethics. Skilled with computer usage competencies and knowledge of technological trends for advancing Student Affairs operations.
Minimum Training and Experience
A Master's degree is required in student personnel, higher education administration, counseling and guidance, public administration, or other related area with a minimum of three-five years of highly successful experience in student affairs administration with a proven track record of experience in new student orientation planning, development and implementation as well as in advising and mentoring student organizations (i.e. / orientation leaders, student government association, student programming boards, etc.).
