POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for the prompt repair and ongoing maintenance of roadway, roadside, right of way, shoulder, tunnels and ERC facilities. Identifies, monitors and troubleshoots problems. Keeps records of work performed and completes maintenance history logs. Assures safe operation of maintenance activities and equipment usage. Maintains grounds.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Assumes responsibility for the efficient and effective performance of maintenance activities and equipment usage.
- Assumes duties of Maintenance Foreman in his/her absence.
- Provides leadership and guidance to others in support of maintenance activities.
- Assists in the training of all maintenance crew member and seasonal positions.
- Operates light/medium duty maintenance equipment (pick-up, dump truck, crash cushion truck, cone truck).
- Uses a wide variety of roadway maintenance tools (chain saw, concrete saw, portable generator, air compressor, jack hammer, etc.)
- Performs preventive maintenance on light/medium duty equipment under direction of supervisor and/or Maintenance Foreman.
- Performs routine and emergency roadway maintenance work, as directed within established time frames.
- Installs, maintains, and removes various types of roadway lane closures (mobile and static) under the direction of Maintenance Foreman.
- Performs roadside and facility landscaping work, such as; clearing weeds and brush, and planting and trimming.
- Assigned vehicle(s) kept in good working condition, fueled up at end of work day, tools removed, and cleanliness of vehicle maintained; perform preventative maintenance as required.
- 100% of all recordkeeping, documentation, reports, etc. submitted in accurate, readable format by due date.
- Perform Pre-Trip and Post-Trip Vehicle Inspection on assigned equipment.
- Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times
- 100% compliance with MUTCD and Virginia Work Area Protection Manual
- Perform all duties in a safe manner and adhere to all laws governing vehicle operation; maintain safe driving record with zero preventable accidents.
- Perform all other duties assigned.
- Keeps records of all work performed and updates maintenance history logs in the asset management system (Asset Essentials).
- Controls and accounts for equipment entering or leaving the building.
- Assists in developing a preventive maintenance schedule.
- Ensures an adequate inventory of necessary spare parts and materials is maintained
- Assists personnel as needed.
- Communicates regularly with personnel to ensure that repairs and maintenance needs are met and coordinated with maintenance schedules.
- Completes related paperwork and records.
- Attends meetings as require
- Keeps management informed of areas activities and of significant concerns. Reports major concerns or significant problems.
4. Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
- Assists in moving materials, supplies, and equipment as needed.
- Performs building maintenance functions as needed.
- Ensures work area is clean, secure and well maintained.
Education/Certification:
High school graduate or equivalent. Must be at least 21 years old.
Experience Required:
At least two years of related work experience, preferably in the highway maintenance, or highway construction or an equivalent combination of education and/or related experience. Prior experience in a leading role or directing the work of others is preferred. CDL Class A or B, VWAPM Work Zone certified and flagger certification is preferred.
High school graduate or equivalent. Must be at least 21 years old.

At least two years of related work experience, preferably in the highway maintenance, or highway construction or an equivalent combination of education and/or related experience. Prior experience in a leading role or directing the work of others is preferred. CDL Class A or B, VWAPM Work Zone certified and flagger certification is preferred.

- Experience performing manual labor

- Ability to perform preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Ability to operate light and medium highway maintenance equipment is preferred.
- Ability to frequently operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex, and rapid adjustments including, but not limited to; sander, motor grader, dump truck, tractor, front end loader, drill press, welder, common hand and power tools, welder/cutting torch, chain saw, weed trimmer, hydraulic jacks, shovel, ax, rakes, brooms, and forks.
- Valid Virginia Drivers’ License and acceptable driving history is required.
- Knowledge of the MUTCD and VWAPM is preferred
- Experience performing various types of lane closures/traffic control is preferred.
- Ability to obtain a VDOT Security Clearance
- Ability to pass Criminal History Background Check and drug screen.
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule to include dayshift, nightshift, weekends and extended hours.
- Ability to effectively lead and guide the other crew members.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to exert moderately heavy (up to 50 pounds) physical effort in moderate to heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing highly skilled movements such as operating heavy equipment.
- Ability to frequently operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex, and rapid adjustments including, but not limited to; sander, motor grader, dump truck, tractor, front end loader, drill press, welder, common hand and power tools, welder/cutting torch, chain saw, weed trimmer, hydraulic jacks, shovel, ax, rakes, brooms, and forks.
- Hearing: Able to perceive a forced whispered voice in the better ear at not less than 5 feet with or without the use of a hearing aid or, if tested by use of an audiometric device, does not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz with or without a hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard (formerly ASA Standard) Z24.5—1951.
- Vision: Must have distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye without corrective lenses or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/40 (Snellen) or better with corrective lenses, distant binocular acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in both eyes with or without corrective lenses, field of vision of at least 70° in the horizontal Meridian in each eye, and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber.
- Worker is subject to varying inside and/or outside temperatures, which may include extreme heat (temperatures above 100 degrees) or extreme cold (temperatures below 32 degrees).
- Work is performed both inside and outside. Subject to weather.
- May work in a very noisy environment, which requires workers to shout to communicate.
- The worker is subject to significant vibration.
- Must work under hazardous conditions including high places, inclined platforms/surfaces, confined spaces, chemical exposures, electrical current, moving machinery, exposure to blood, etc. Roadways and highways
- The worker is subject to fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc., which affect the skin or respiratory system. Must be able to wear a tight-fitting face piece respirator.
- Frequent local travel.
