PRIMARY FUNCTION of a Parent and Child Specialist:
50% time: Assisting in all aspects of the delivery of therapeutic mentoring services, parent support, supervised visitation and visit coaching. 50% time: maintaining a caseload of families while serving as a positive role model for youth and families, providing support, coaching, training, and supervision within a healthy, positive relationship.
RESPONSIBILITIES of a Parent and Child Specialist:
- Actively promote and recruit therapeutic mentoring/visit referrals and help recruit qualified staff within the identified local area
- Supervise the processing of all therapeutic mentoring referrals, including the following:
- Determine the appropriateness of a referral based on the client’s need, Elk Hill’s expertise, staffing availability and geographic dynamics
- Complete screening of referred clients and, for all clients found to be appropriate for supervised visit/ therapeutic mentoring services, completion of an assessment.
- Ensure that all required documentation is completed for billing and payroll
- Arrange the logistics for the provision of therapeutic mentoring services
- Provide placing/referring agencies, families, clients, and others with necessary documentation for services
- Work with youth and families to develop interpersonal, communication, social, and problem-solving skills, as well as age-appropriate behaviors and constructive use of leisure time
- Provide and supervise recreational and social activities based on the goals established collaboratively with the youth, parents, and placing agency
- Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of parents and youth, flexibility, a non-threatening manner, respect for youth’s autonomy, confidentiality, socio-cultural values, personal goals, lifestyle choices, and family interactions, and appropriate professional boundaries and ethics
- Maintain and develop positive relationships with referring agencies, social workers, school placements, court service personnel, parents, licensed mental health professionals and other persons involved in youth and family services
- Assume primary responsibility for developing, implementing, and overseeing supervised visitation/therapeutic mentoring services, including the following:
- Identify and implement a model of service delivery that most effectively and efficiently meets the needs of our clients
- Provide necessary training to staff who provide therapeutic mentoring services for Elk Hill
- Maintain appropriate staffing levels to meet program needs
- Work closely with the Visit Supervisor/Mentors, Prevention Services Coordinator, and other relevant persons to ensure proper billing procedures are practiced
- Write service goals and review session notes created for clients receiving therapeutic mentoring services, as well as any other documentation generated by Elk Hill related to the client
- Maintain comprehensive client files, records and outcome/client satisfaction data concerning community services activities for evaluation purposes
- Work cooperatively with Elk Hill staff to improve the quality of the organization
- Represent Elk Hill at FAPT, CPMT, VCOPPA, VAISSEF, vendor fairs, and any other marketing, community, or professional events/organizations as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Meet requirements of a Qualified Mental Health Professional or Licensed Mental Health Professional (LMHP or LMHP-R) or High School diploma with the equivalent of 10 or more years working with at-risk youth combined with some supervisory experience.
- Home-based, Therapeutic Day Treatment, Outpatient, or Residential experience, preferred
- Experience in clinical and/or administrative supervision preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and without direct supervision
- Hold a valid driver’s license
- Willingness to travel and possibly work non-traditional business hours
- Exhibit consistent personal integrity in dealings with youth, families, co-workers, and community agencies
- High level of organizational skills
