The Opportunity:

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is now hiring a Grounds Maintenance Keeper at the Prescott campus. The Crew Lead performs maintenance and repairs on the landscaped grounds, parking lots, roads, fencing, and drainage systems as assigned by the Foreman. This position installs new and renovates old landscaping, including but not limited to turf, trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds This position provides an emergency response, as appropriate, to exterior hazardous conditions, and assists with various special events, set-ups, and building service functions as needed.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Coordinate the work for and the maintain campus grounds, to include: mowing, edging, trimming, trenching, seeding, laying sod, trash removal, and any other assigned tasks. Operate power equipment using caution to ensure safety of both life and property. Maintain parking lots and roadways including potholes, curb stops, and cleaning.
  • Supervise Groundskeepers. This includes annual evaluation of Groundskeepers, maintaining schedules, and labor records. Training new personnel, assisting student employees when necessary. Ensuring the total team effort of the workforce to complete the tasks assigned each day.
  • Inspect all landscaped areas of responsibility to ensure they are maintained in an acceptable state to University Administration. Schedule work accordingly.
  • Through the Work Order system, ensure the support of all approved special events and address all non-routine requests.
  • The Crew Leader is responsible for inspection of all equipment to be utilized by Groundskeepers and for all equipment to be turned in to the Transportation Department for daily maintenance.
  • Maintain records of work hours and materials used. Responsible for keeping all equipment safe from vandalism or theft during working hours. Responsible for requesting equipment and ordering supplies in advance to assure job completion. Responsible for ensuring all equipment is secured at the end of the work day.
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor, department foreman, or organizational department head.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High school (or GED) level ability in spelling, grammar, basic composition, and math.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver's license. (In some instances, a valid Class C (CDL) license may be required.)
  • Must meet the University's standards for approved drivers. Unacceptable driving records (as stated in the Use of Equipment and Vehicles Procedure 1.17) include the following (for three years from the date of each occurrence):
    • More than 3 moving violations and/or accidents in 3 years
    • More than 2 moving violations and/or accidents in any 1 year
    • A major conviction in the last 3 years, including (but not limited to) driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, and/or homicide or assault by motor vehicle.
  • Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing, with the ability to comprehend basic instructions and to respond effectively.
  • Must be able to operate a standard shift vehicle.
  • Ability to operate all power equipment as related to grounds maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge in all areas of grounds maintenance, horticulture, etc.
  • Ability to climb ladders or scaffolding and work in overhead areas.
  • Ability to give and to comprehend basic instructions and to respond effectively.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry miscellaneous grounds equipment or supplies short distances and to push or pull various grounds maintenance equipment. Eye-hand coordination is essential for proper operation of power tools and other work associated with grounds maintenance.
  • Employee must take necessary precautions due to the nature of the equipment they are working with and the outside elements subjected to, to protect themselves and those around them of the hazards associated with this type of work.
