The English Language Center (ELC) has been dedicated to providing English programs of the highest quality to international students since 1978. By employing highly qualified and dedicated instructors and by utilizing a dynamic and comprehensive curriculum, ELC provides the perfect environment for rapid language improvement. ELC also offers students extensive support services to ensure that their stay in the United States is culturally as well as educationally enriching.
ELC’s Junior Programs welcome international students between the ages of 11-17 every summer and operate out of 2 campuses across the country:
Boston University (June 22 - August 3)
University of California, Los Angeles (June 29 - August 10)
Our summer programs give students the opportunity to study English in the summer and have fun with other international students at UCLA or Boston. Offered during June, July, and August our summer junior programs provide students with a 20-lesson per week Semi-Intensive English Course, on-campus accommodation, and daily activities. We are looking for enthusiastic employees who want to gain valuable experience in international education and youth development.
Role Description
Summer Camp Counselors are central to a successful student experience and the success of the ELC community. They serve as the primary supervisors of students while on activities or excursions and report to Activities Coordinators. They have two major responsibilities: 1) Leading and supervising student activities during afternoons and weekends and/or student arrivals/departures, and 2) Building and contributing to a positive and supportive environment that promotes intercultural understanding and community. They are enthusiastic and resourceful leaders who look forward to working with international youth. Summer Camp Counselors are engaged members of the ELC team who are strong team players and put the needs of the students first. (This is NOT a live in position.)

Summer Camp Counselor Responsibilities
Duties of the Summer Camp Counselor include but are not limited to:
Activities
- Following the directives and activities schedule as assigned by the Activities Coordinator.
- Read through the description to gain some knowledge of the activity to provide the students with relevant information and serve as an enthusiastic tour guide
- Leading, guiding, and supervising mandatory and optional activities.
- Leading and supervising optional evening activities and excursions with enthusiasm.
- Ask questions when activity details are unclear.
- Working with the Activities Coordinator to suggest and plan optional evening activities.
Reporting all attendance and behavioral problems from activities to the RDs.
- Ensuring the safety of your assigned group at all times.
- Accompanying and leading students on weekend excursions.
- Following contingency and emergency plans for all weekend excursions.
Other duties as assigned by Senior Staff:
- Attending daily activity meetings and staff meetings
- Filing written incident and progress reports as needed
- Collaborating with fellow RCs to provide students and staff with the best experience possible
- Collaborating with Housing and APPU Coordinator to ensure efficient arrival and departure for students
- Serving as a mentor and role model for students and colleagues
- Representing ELC with professionalism, integrity, kindness, and enthusiasm
- Assisting in finding missing students who are not in attendance for classes and/or activities
Academic:
- Assisting with student academic orientation on Mondays
- May be asked to assist with grading
- Supervising students during break times and while traveling to and from classes
- Keeping students engaged during downtime with small activities and games
Other duties are to be determined by the Junior Programs Senior Staff and/or Campus Manager throughout the program.
