Crane Operator

Gateway Terminal is a leading terminal on the East Coast strategically located in the Port of New Haven, Connecticut, providing turnkey vertically integrated logistics services for dry bulk, liquid bulk, and breakbulk products.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The primary job of the port crane operator is to load and unload bulk, and break bulk from or onto a vessel. The job requires maximum concentration, precision, and excellent hand-eye coordination. Secondary duties require highly skilled work in the operation and general maintenance of a wide variety of heavy equipment used in the maritime industry. Must be qualified to operate all types of cranes, stackers, yard hustlers, forklifts, and heavy industrial construction equipment. Work involves the safe and efficient operation of primarily the heaviest and largest types of equipment used in a full range of maritime operations. Must have mastered a broad spectrum of activities and responsibilities in multiple major areas of vessel operations and terminal operations. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Safe and efficient operation of gantry cranes, Forklifts, Yard Hustlers, and other support equipment.
• Complete daily, monthly, and annual safety inspections of equipment must record results in the machinery history log and assist in corrective measures.
• Qualify in all vessel operations support equipment, terminal support, and warehouse support equipment.
• Participate in the training and administration of training of key support personnel including flagmen, yard gang, and new operators.
• Maintain standard proficiency rating as established by management; participate in the proficiency evaluation of other operators.
• Demonstrate a complete knowledge of general practices applied in the care and safe operation of a wide variety of light to heavy equipment used in the maritime industry.
• Demonstrate a complete knowledge of laws, regulations, safety standards, and procedures applied in the care and safe operation of a wide variety of light to heavy equipment used in the maritime industry.
• Responsible for committing to memory the standard hand signals for crane operations and ensuring compliance
• Additional duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• A Connecticut Crane Operator License is required to operate hoisting equipment or have equivalent experience.
• Demonstrates a high level of skill and problem-solving ability
• Able to work in conjunction with other team members and supervisions via radio phone and or hand signals.
• Understands and correctly uses the machine's load chart.
• Reacts to changes in conditions that affect the safe operation of the crane.
• Able to pick carry swing and place a load smoothly and safely.
• Previous crane operation experience.
• Experience working in the Stevedore industry.
• High School or Equivalent, Certification/Diploma
• Resourceful, well-organized, and dependable.
• Good organizational skills.
• Ability to communicate with diverse personalities.
• Ability to work overtime during the week or on weekends.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.

COMPETENCIES:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to stand; walk; use hands, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The work environment involves hazards, risks, or discomforts typical of working around with or around machinery with exposed moving parts, arrant chemicals, heavy equipment, extreme heights, or abusive or hostile clientele and patients. Exposure to disagreeable weather conditions and extreme levels of temperature, ventilation, lighting, and sound is normal. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
