Job Overview
The Eye Bank Tissue Recovery Specialist is responsible for recovering eye tissues needed for transplant and/or research; performing and documenting a donor physical and ocular assessment; obtaining an adequate blood specimen for serologic testing; and conducting professional interactions with hospital staff, organ procurement organizations and tissue bank staff, the County Coroners office, and funeral directors.

Duties

  • RESPONSIBILITIES

The Eye Bank Tissue Recovery Specialist will be responsible for the following:

  • Perform enucleation of whole eyes, and corneoscleral rim

excision/preservation.

  • Conduct professional interactions with Eye Bank Donor Coordinators to facilitate timely

procurement of donor eye tissue.

  • Perform a physical inspection of the donor and recognize and document any signs of high-risk behavior.
  • Perform an ocular assessment of the donor’s eyes and document any findings.
  • Apply sterile technique and universal precautions during eye recovery procedures.
  • Draw cadaveric blood and/or obtain a pre-transfusion/pre-mortem blood sample, if necessary.
  • Review and verify all necessary paperwork prior to tissue recovery.
  • Complete Donor Worksheet for each donor procured

which may require utilizing the donor’s hospital chart, if applicable.

  • Label, package, and ship blood per FDA/EBAA/Envision Policies and Procedures.
  • Understand and comply with FDA/Eye Bank Association of America and Envision Policies and Procedures regarding ocular tissue recovery.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA standards when handling tissue and disposable hazardous materials and participate in annual bloodborne pathogen training.
  • Maintain excellent customer service relations with referring hospitals, funeral directors, and all partners and colleagues.
  • Maintain compliance with Federal HIPAA regulations
  • Attend quarterly Technical Staff Meetings.
  • Participate and comply with established Quality Assurance policies and assist with routine monitoring upon request.

Skills

  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY
  • Possess knowledge of all Envision recovery standard operating procedures, EBAA Medical Standards, and technical/medical terminology.
  • Possess skills in aseptic technique and manual dexterity.
  • Strong communication skills and excellent telephone etiquette.
  • Ability to prioritize procurement of donors to maintain efficiency in tissue recovery with

minimum supervision.

  • Exercise good judgment and initiative, be honest, discreet and ethical.
  • Interact with all others in a professional and customer-friendly manner.
  • Ability to be a supportive team member.
  • Background in medical/laboratory fields.
  • Must have own car with a valid Idaho driver’s license.
  • Travel required within a 100-mile radius of Envision.
  • Prefer one year experience in a medical field.
  • Must be able to take call as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • Associate’s degree in biology, chemistry or other scientific discipline in a related field or

equivalency required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Required Qualifications:

Medical background with experience in one or more of the following roles:

Coroner’s Office/Death Investigator

Surgical or Ophthalmic Technician

Medical Assistant or EMT/Paramedic

Tissue Recovery Specialist (or similar role in organ/tissue procurement)

Knowledge of:

Medical terminology, pathophysiology, and disease transmission

Donor screening, triage, and risk assessment

Aseptic and surgical techniques

Scheduled On-Call Hours:

One night per week: On-call from 4:30 PM to 7:00 AM

One weekend per month:

On-call from Saturday 7:00 AM to Monday 7:00 AM
