What are the responsibilities and job description for the Operations & Maintenance Technician position at EthosEnergy?

Freedom Generating Station (FGS) is a 1,050 MW, 2x1x1 GE 7HA.02 combined cycle electric generating facility in Salem Township, PA. This facility has an OMT - Maintenance position available on a full-time basis.

This critical role will be responsible for installing, troubleshooting, aligning, maintaining, and repairing rotating and stationary equipment used at Freedom Generating Station and will be assigned to the Maintenance Department. This equipment includes gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, heat recovery steam generators, air cooled condensers, air compressors, motors, valves, pumps, fire suppression systems, and all other balance of plant auxiliary equipment. The position will report to the Maintenance Manager.

Successful candidates must demonstrate knowledge of all facets of power plant maintenance including gas and steam turbine maintenance. Knowledge of GE 7HA.02 heavy frame, advanced technology gas turbines, GE A650 steam turbines and single shaft arrangements is preferred. Minimum of five (5) years of directly related operations or maintenance experience in an electrical generating facility, or other process related industry required. Maintenance planning and scheduling experience is a plus!

Job Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair the cause of mechanical equipment malfunctions such as pumps, valves, fans, piping, structures, tools, etc.
  • Review oil analysis and vibration data and alerts Maintenance Manager of out of limit trends.
  • Install new mechanical equipment as required.
  • Properly use mechanical testing equipment and other similar tools.
  • Perform rotating equipment alignment using precision tools.
  • Perform oxyacetylene cutting, shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) including layout and fit up.
  • Remove, clean, inspect, and install sliding surface and rolling contact bearings with fixed or adjustable running clearances.
  • Disassemble, inspect, repair, adjust, and assemble valves requiring lapping, part replacement, cleaning and packing replacement.
  • Perform maintenance of equipment by cleaning, adjusting, tightening, performing corrective, predictive and preventative maintenance, and identify equipment in need of maintenance action.
  • Maintain equipment by tightening fittings, replacing valve packing, gaskets, valves, gauges, etc. and cleaning, replacing, oiling, and lubricating other component parts and equipment as required.
  • Visually inspect and listen to equipment to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment, or lubrication.
  • Repair, replace, dismantle, and examine defective parts and components.
  • Diagnose cause of mechanical and operational malfunction or failure of equipment.
  • Open, inspect, overhaul pumps and gearboxes.
  • Cut, fit, and install threaded pipe, valves, and fittings.
  • Develop rigging plans and operations using safe work practices.
  • Fully support the use of a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) by demonstrating proficiency in using the system and entering data consistent with the facility maintenance philosophy.
  • Record equipment discrepancies in detail on work orders and documents maintenance actions taken.
  • Execute corrective and preventive maintenance work orders in a timely and high-quality manner
  • Close work orders when all tasks are complete.
  • Show diligence in documenting spare parts usage and re-ordering.
  • Initiate purchase requests and coordinate and direct outside contractors as required to ensure completion of position responsibilities.
  • Read meters, gauges, or automatic devices to record data such as pressures, temperatures, fluid levels, vibration, hours of operation, pressure, and fluid levels to verify operating conditions and assess maintenance conditions.
  • Support activities to maintain compliance with all administrative, operational, NERC, HSE and other regulatory programs and procedures.
  • Use facility operating procedures and equipment technical manuals to maintain and repair facility equipment and ensure equipment is operated within operating range.
  • Perform capital project and/or major program responsibilities as assigned by the Maintenance Manager.
  • May be required to drive a licensed motor vehicle to supply or repair facilities to deliver or retrieve parts or materials for the facility.
  • Assist other OMTs in repairing and maintaining plant equipment.
  • Perform general housekeeping and continuous improvement of the appearance of the facility.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of all areas of plant and control room, or other duties as assigned.
  • Ensure all accidents, incidents, near misses, and potential hazards are immediately reported to Facility Management.
  • Keep Lead OMT and/or Facility Management fully informed of unusual plant conditions and current job progress as it relates to facility operations.
  • Work with Facility Management in managing the facility’s warehouse and spare parts inventory, performing audits as needed.
  • Support outage planning and scheduling involvement as needed.
  • Cover the duties of OMTs and the operation of the facility as required.
  • Assist with development of Operations and Maintenance procedures and perform Root Cause Analysis of failures.
  • May operate plant equipment such manlift and forklift.
  • Read, understand, and comply with all regulatory procedures, permits and safety programs.
  • Will support an atmosphere of employee involvement, trust, and motivation through employee mentoring, participation, empowerment, collaboration, and training.
  • Foster a team culture which is flexible and adaptable to change, striving for continuous improvement in the accomplishment of work.
  • Other duties as assigned by Facility Management.

Required Skills / Knowledge

  • Demonstrate knowledge of all facets of power plant maintenance including knowledge of gas and steam turbine maintenance.
  • Knowledge of GE 7HA.02 heavy frame, advanced technology gas turbines, GE A650 steam turbines and single shaft arrangements is preferred.
  • Ability to make competent decisions in emergency situations.
  • Adept at troubleshooting and diagnosing problems with mechanical equipment with ability to apply a resolution in a timely fashion.
  • Proficient at repairing, replacing, dismantling, and inspecting defective plant equipment and parts such as pumps, valves, fans, gearboxes, demineralizers, compressors, and turbine components.
  • Can operate welding and cutting equipment and complete metal fabrication projects.
  • Capable of setting up and operating a drill press, pipe threading machine, grinder, and various tools to make and repair parts and equipment.
  • Must have ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical one-lines, logic drawings, technical manuals, and P&ID's.
  • Strong computer proficiency with Microsoft Office software.
  • Good verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to operate a fork-lift and similar plant equipment.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of directly related operations or maintenance experience in an electrical generating facility, or other process related industry.
  • Knowledge of advanced technology gas turbines, steam turbines, single shaft arrangements and commissioning experience is preferred but not required.
  • Maintenance planning and scheduling experience preferred.

Education Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associates Degree (AA) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school is preferred. Education in power generation, mechanical maintenance, operations, electrical maintenance or instrument and controls is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to do walking, reaching, climbing, and lifting (up to 50 pounds).
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Must be willing to work overtime and be available for call-ins as needed to support reliable operation of the facility.
