What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelter Advocate position at EVE Incorporated?
Overview
Needed ASAP: Advocate for overnight shift 11pm-7am. Interviews being scheduled now!
EVE, Inc. seeks to prevent family violence and sexual assault through education and intervention, while providing supportive services to survivors. We promote a safe and healthy community, and work to help improve the overall quality of life.
The Shelter Advocate is the most important position at EVE, Inc. It is boots on the ground; multi-tasking, no-fear, super hero, with an empathetic ear. They can take a crisis call, buzz in a co-worker, give Tylenol to a client, start a list of donated items, schedule an intake, clean up a mess from a sick kid, all within minutes. Advocates are absolutely crucial in providing support and assistance to individuals experiencing crises, particularly those seeking refuge in a shelter environment.
This position involves working closely with clients (their families and children) to ensure their safety, well-being, and access to necessary resources. The Shelter Advocate will utilize crisis intervention techniques and behavioral health knowledge to create a supportive environment for individuals in need. Perfect for those entering the social work field.
Duties
- Provide crisis intervention over phone and in person and maintain emotional support to clients in distress.
- Implement behavior management strategies to promote a safe and respectful environment.
- Maintain rules and boundaries.
- Administer first aid when necessary and ensure the health and safety of all shelter residents.
- Supervise daily activities within the shelter, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
- Communicate effectively with clients, staff, and external agencies to coordinate services.
- Support medication administration as needed, following established protocols.
- Engage clients in activities that promote their well-being and encourage positive behavior.
- Being a good listener and referring to others as necessary.
- Cleaning (even bathrooms), organizing, documenting, taking a multitude of phone calls.
- It is not always glamorous, but at least you can wear jeans.
Experience
Candidates should possess a background in behavioral health or related fields (flexible), with experience in crisis intervention being highly desirable.
Skills in data collection, case management, and supervising are essential for success in this role but can be taught. Familiarity with first aid practices is beneficial, as is the ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with diverse populations. A commitment to supporting individuals in crisis is paramount for the Shelter Advocate position and is the only MUST HAVE.
