SUMMARY

Incumbent is responsible for providing academic and cultural development support to eligible Alaska Native and American Indian students, both primary and secondary grades, in small groups, one-on-one settings and/or extended school day hours.

 

JOB DUTIES

  • Provides academic and cultural development support to eligible Alaska Native and American Indian students in small groups, one-on-one settings and/or extended school day hours.
  • Tutor students in some or all the following subjects:   reading, writing, math, language arts, English, science, social studies; integrate into classrooms with high number of Native students.
  • Provides support to classroom teachers on issues and strategies in working with students to meet the goals of the district’s curriculum and the students’ needs.
  • Uses current data system to maintain records of all students served, logs and tracks the type of support provided to students and the students’ progress. Provides monthly and quarterly reports to supervisor. 
  • Identifies eligible students in need of tutorial services through Power School and collaboration with teacher, parent, or guardian.
  • Provides individual and small group academic instruction, adapting curriculum to meet individual student needs; coordinates tutoring services, and reports to teachers and parents on student progress.
  • Collaborates with classroom teacher(s) in determining the needs of students; implements and evaluates individual tutorial plans, maintains, and evaluates student records and tracks academic progress; assists in parent-teacher conferences, upon request.
  • Attends staff meetings; maintains close working relationship with school community.
  • Maintains client and family confidentiality according to FERPA. Adheres to Code of Ethics and to confidentiality requirements as outlined in 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPPA. 
  • Serves as a resource for Alaska Native cultural support.
  • Schedule follows that of the assigned work area:   either the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District or Charter School calendar.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of curriculum, various content areas, and learning styles is critical to making decisions related to tutoring and educational planning.
  • Ability to report to work in a timely manner.
  • Skill in operating personal computer utilizing a variety of computer software.
  • Understanding and sensitivity to diverse cultures and lifestyles, and ability to work effectively with Alaska Native populations.
  • Skill in managing multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meeting deadlines.
  • Skills in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with children, parents, supervisors, and the school community.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with teams.
  • Ability to effectively present instruction, and/or information to students, staff, parents, administrators, and public

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least two (2) years of college (AA or 48 credits) or passing the ParaPro Assessment or HELP test required, if working in Title I schools
  • A combination of experience, education, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may substitute for degree requirements.
  • Current CPR/First Aide or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)

  • Associate’s degree in related field

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The work is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 25 lbs. Most of the work is performed in an office setting with a wide variety of people with differing functions, personalities, and abilities. The office is a non-smoking facility with outside smoking areas. Requires local travel between various program components of FNA which may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions. Works in an environment where protection of client confidentiality is essential.

 

SPECIFICATIONS

Supervision Received:

Position receives direct supervision from JOM Program Director; however, incumbent is expected to effectively perform day-to-day activity as noted within job description. Work will be monitored through meetings, monthly reports, and regular communication with the building principal or designee. General guidelines for operations are based on program requirements and the general policies and procedures of FNA.

Position Impact:

Impact at the program level is moderate. Program’s level of compliance with program standards is directly affected by the effective performance of duties, especially as they relate to providing tutorial services to targeted students.

 

Contacts:

Contacts include, and are not limited to, JOM Program staff, school building principal and staff, students, and parents/guardians, FNA organizational staff and outside resource agencies.

To drive your personal vehicle for FNA business an individual must provide a copy of their current Alaska Driver’s License and a copy of their proof of personal liability insurance. No employee may transport a FNA client in a personal vehicle.

 

Continued employment status will be contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal background investigation and the pre-employment drug testing process. Where required, continued employment status (post job offer) will be contingent upon employee providing certification of annual tuberculosis (TB) screening and medical certification that employee does not, because of infectious or communicable disease, pose a direct threat or significant risk to the health and safety of program participants or others in the workplace.
