Title: Youth Advocate
Program: Fairbanks Youth Advocates (The Door)
Status: hourly: $19.00 This position is midnight to 8am, Monday-Thursday, 32 hours per week.
Summary:
Fairbanks Youth Advocates provides youth ages 12-18 emergency shelter at The Door in Alaska’s Interior. We are seeking an energetic, compassionate, and dedicated person to join our team. Youth Advocates are responsible for the safety of the youth at The Door and provide supervision in cooperation with other staff and volunteers while building intentional relationships with youth and with fellow team members. This is a MANDATORY AWAKE OVERNIGHT position.
Qualifications:
- Must have a high school diploma or a general educational development (GED) diploma.
- Can demonstrate an understanding, knowledge, or have experience with youth and adolescents.
- Must pass all required federal & state background checks.
- Can provide 3 references attesting to the good character, reputation, interpersonal, and professional skills of the applicant. None shall be related by blood or marriage.
- Must be 21 or older.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Builds intentional, positive relationships with youth and supports youth throughout the shift.
- Helps youth feel physically and emotionally safe by fostering an inclusive environment through managing disruptive behaviors and conflict, addressing bullying, and maintaining a sense of order.
- Assists youth in handling emergencies and difficult situations while fostering decision making and problem-solving skills and treating youth’s concerns with respect, tact, and sensitivity.
- Can convey with competence and sensitivity the key elements of healthy and safe living including healthy eating, exercising, basic hygiene, and avoiding risky behaviors.
- Performs client intakes and discharges, maintains accurate documentation, answers the phone, and assists in the operating needs of the shelter.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding the agency and youth accessing services.
- Communicates positively and respectfully with the community as well as with parents. guardians, caseworkers, social workers, and other agencies as appropriate.
- Facilitates compliance with and supports agency policies and procedures.
- Ensures that the shelter is clean, organized, and maintained.
- Participates in team meetings, staff training, and other opportunities for professional development.
- Assists in training, supervision, and orientation of volunteers when called upon.
- Communicates and clarifies all pertinent information to supervisor as well as to the oncoming shift during shift change.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Basic knowledge and awareness of youth development (emotional, social, and cognitive needs)
- Basic knowledge of trauma-informed care
- Exercises sound judgement in conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and mediation situations
- Ability or experience in working with diverse populations
- Must be self motivated and able to take initiative while valuing being part of a close-knit team
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to carry up to 25 pounds up/down a flight of stairs
- Is CPR/First Aid certified or able to be obtained within 30 days

Wednesday: Midnight to 8am
Thursday: Midnight to 8am
