Come join the Stormwater Planning Division, a nationally recognized team within the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) that plans and implements a comprehensive stormwater assessment and management program to improve water quality and the health, safety, and welfare of the county’s 1.2 million residents.

Under the general direction of the branch chief, the successful candidate will be member of a collaborative team of dedicated high performing staff that are responsible for the implementation of major stormwater capital improvement projects in the county.

The Stormwater Planning Division is a nationally-recognized team committed to improving sustainability and resiliency by equitably reducing flood risk and improving stormwater management and the water quality of approximately 400 square miles of local watersheds and the Chesapeake Bay.

Under general supervision, the successful candidate will:
  • Possesses strong knowledge of local, state, and federal codes and regulations related to stormwater, land disturbance, floodplain management, and dam safety.
  • Collaborate in a team environment of engineers, project managers, landscape architects, technicians and other technical specialists on stormwater implementation projects.
  • Be responsible for the development and management of project scopes of work, budgets and schedules.
  • Negotiates, manages and ensures the work of professional engineering and consulting services firms comply with contract and schedule requirements and serves as the project manager for stormwater capital improvement projects.

The successful candidate will have:
  • A strong background with hydrologic and hydraulic principles.
  • Proven program/project management experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills using various communication methods.
  • The ability to establish collaborative relationships with staff, external agencies, residents, environmental groups, government leaders, and other stakeholders.

NOTE: The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as-needed basis.

This position works in the DPWES Stormwater Planning Watershed Implementation Branch located at 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Virginia.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:
(Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus, three years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering or architectural field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Three years of strong oral and written communication skills experience, including the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Two years of experience successfully managing stormwater or wastewater capital improvement projects from concept, through design and construction utilizing professional service engineering contracts.
  • Two years of experience reviewing and analyzing construction plans and specifications.
  • Two years of experience successfully managing and implementing stormwater or wastewater projects including stream restoration design using natural channel design methodologies, and stormwater facilities through applicable federal, state and local codes and regulations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability and willingness to work in adverse weather conditions responding to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as-needed basis. Ability to carry up to 40 pounds of equipment. Ability to communicate effectively with the public verbally and in writing. Ability to drive a motor vehicle. Ability to hike or field walk rugged, uneven and steep terrain in streams and stream valleys to perform field investigation on storm drainage, stormwater management, stream channel and roadway improvement projects. Ability to work in hot and cold temperatures. Physically and mentally able to use all applicable personal protective equipment in an outdoor environment; including hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt, rain gear, and personal floatation device. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
