What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laboratory Assistant position at Fairview Health Services?
The Laboratories at University of Minnesota Medical Center-East Bank is looking for a fulltime Laboratory Assistant (LA), working 80 hours per 2 week pay period. Hours are 8:00am - 5:00pm or 9:00am - 6:00pm Monday - Friday. No weekends!
The LA performs all work processes necessary for the preparation of specimens used for high complexity testing as defined by CLIA'88. The LA possesses knowledge of the clinical laboratories, performs routine and specialty procedures, recognizes problems, identifies basic causes, and makes corrections using established protocols. The LA performs daily sterilization of laboratory equipment through various modes of sterilization (dishwasher and autoclaving). Daily works with Special Chemistry in ordering lab tests from outside clients. The LA collaborates with the customers of the laboratory to promote customer satisfaction. The LA works independently under general supervision.

Responsibilities
Follows established guidelines and procedures to accession/order enter specimens/tests into the computer system.
Performs all work processes necessary for the production of specimens used for high complexity testing as defined by CLIA'88.
Recognizes problems and takes appropriate measures to resolve them.
Evaluates diagnostic preparations for quality and initiates interventions as needed.
Complies with Laboratory Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement, and Laboratory Compliance Programs.
Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served.
May include other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
- High School education/GED
- 1 to 3 years’ experience in a laboratory setting or sterilization field.
