Fairview Health Services is looking for an Ophthalmic Technician to work out of our Fridley location. This is a full time, 80 hours every two weeks, benefit eligable position.
Responsibilities
The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for assisting the Ophthalmologist by gathering data pertaining to the patient’s visual status and maintain an environment conducive to the delivery of efficient, quality patient care. The Ophthalmic Technician is able to effectively perform appropriate clinical testings such as, but not limiting to: Visual Acuity Testing, Visual Field Testing, lensometry, Automated Refractometry, Pupil Assessment, Gross External Examination, eye drop instillation. Pachymetry, Keratometry, Manifest Refractometry, OCT, HRT, Corneal Topography, slit lamp photography, fundus photography and Ocular motility testing.
- Ability to accurately measure visual acuity using Snellen and allen charts.
- Able to determine with accuracy, the refractive error of any patient of any age with the use of a retinoscope.
- Accurately measure the lens power of a given pair of glasses and recognizing and measuring prism, PD, Base Curve and optical centers.
- Able to measure and neutralize with prism and ocular deviation (ET, XT, HT, etc)
- Able to recognize the under or over actions of a particular EOM.
- Ability to accurately measure pupil diameter, reactivity (both direct and consensual), and be able to determine the appearance of an APD (afferent pupillary defect).
- Ability to measure, with accuracy, using the instruments available, central corneal thickness.
- Measuring and recording intraocular pressure using the instruments available (Goldmann applanation tonometer, Tonopen).
- Color vision testing; Ishiahara, Farnsworth 15D
- Visual Field Testing; accurately record a patient’s visual field using the goldmann perimeter, the Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer, and Confrontation methods.
- Ability to set up and perform a GDX.
- Keratometry; accurately measure the radios of curvature of the cornea using the instruments available (Schirmers, Brightness Acuity Testing)
- Ascan; IOL Master
- Maintain exam rooms with appropriate supplies
- Be able to compile a detailed, accurate ophthalmic history, including:
- Chief complaint
- Duration of symptoms
- Severity of symptoms
- Related symptoms
- Family history of glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetes, strabismus
- Past Ocular history of disease or injury. Ability to compile and record a current medical history, including:
- Ability to measure and record blood pressure when requested.
- In-office surgical procedures; ability to set up and assist in various in-office procedures, including, but not limited to:
- I and D chalazion
- Removal of papilloma
- Tarsorraphy
- Irrigation of NLD
- Biopsy
- Technologist will be able to sterilize all instruments used in procedures using the autoclave provided by the clinic, and following appropriate guidelines set up by the departments.
- Technologist will be required to call in prescriptions refills, first reviewing the patient’s chart to verify the need and legitimacy of the authorization request. Triaging phone messages; keeping in mind, the patient’s needs, and the urgency of the particular problem, and the availability of the physician.
Qualifications
Required
- Ophthalmology Technician Certification or/and equivalent experience
- Minimum of 3 years clinical ophthalmologic/optometry experience
Preferred
- Ophthalmology Technician Certification
- Certified Paraoptometric (CPO) or Certified Paraoptometric Technician (CPOT)
