The focus of the Young Adult Advocate is to work with participants of Family Scholar House to support them and to prepare them for the transition from unstable housing to Family Scholar House’s program.
65% Provide Family Advocacy and Academic Coaching services to Family Scholar House participants including connection to government and private programs and benefits to which they may be entitled, development of life skills necessary for self-sufficiency, and referral to supportive services as needed for crisis intervention along with advising students concerning academic and career choices, goals, and objectives. Sessions with participants may include support for enhanced family unity, parenting and homemaking skills, personal goal setting, financial management, family health and safety information, supportive services for crisis management, connection to tutoring opportunities, scholarship resources in the community, connection to financial aid and scholarship resources in the community, career interest assessment, and connection to tutoring opportunities as needed for student remediation. Work with the students’ colleges, universities and individual instructors to support classroom coursework and monitor student progress toward educational goals. Staff member will periodically prepare reports of a confidential nature concerning student performance to share with tProgram Director for Young Adult and Non-Residential Services and appropriate staff.
15% Maintain accurate and up-to-date academic and family advocacy records and notes on all Family Scholar House participants and families and provide reports culled from this information.
10% Maintain knowledge of community social service resources including those that provide Food Stamps, TANF, Child Support, subsidized housing programs, emergency financial assistance, utility bill assistance and counseling for the benefit of Family Scholar House participants. As well as knowledge of community educational resources including the admissions, financial aid, registration, and related academic processes at the institutions attended by participants. Attend relevant training to acquire new skills, YAA will refer Family Scholar House participants to these resources in a timely manner to facilitate economically stable families. Share information about Family Scholar House and support referral relationships with the community through presentations, tabling events and informational sessions with other social service organizations.
5% Represent Family Scholar House in the community and provide supportive services to community members that may benefit from FSH services. This includes tabling events, speaking engagements and case management.
5% Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
Associate with at least 2 years experiences preferred
Previous experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access type databases.
Ability to handle a fast paced environment.
Knowledge of and ability to utilize the Internet and e-mail.
Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $40,000.00 - $42,000.00 per year
