Billing Specialist - Full-Time 35 hours per week - $19.23 per hour
Job Summary
This position is responsible for interfacing with clients and payer sources with respect to client responsibilities. Other functions include acting as a liaison between the billing department and clients.
Job Responsibilities
- Serve as critical point of communication for clients with respect to all client responsibility and billing related information.
- Function as liaison between Billing Department, Office Coordinators, and Office Specialist with regards to client responsibilities.
- Maintain fluid communication with and provide timely updates to Billing Department.
- Obtains pre-registration forms prior to intake appointments and ensures all pertinent authorizations and client responsibility information is obtained.
- Conducts reminder calls prior to client intake appointments.
- Completes Financial Data Sheet, reviews with clients, and communicates information to Billing Department. Information to include, but not limited to co-pays, deductibles, fee schedules, policies.
- Ensures all appropriate documentation, releases, and/or acknowledgements are obtained, completed, and signed by clients, and forwarded to Billing Department.
- Assigns uninsured clients sliding scale fees, reviewing, and documenting proof of income.
- Record information in electronic medical record system as required.
- Track client account balances and collections on past due accounts. Create payment plans with clients as appropriate.
- Demonstrate increased revenue generation through outreach and account management.
- Assists with the other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Does related work as required.
Full performance knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Thorough knowledge of insurance billing and collection procedures.
- Good knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, and insurance/managed care companies’ procedural requirements.
- Ability to understand and interpret a variety of health insurance plans and coverage provided by insurance companies.
- Good knowledge of office terminology, procedures, and equipment.
- Ability to learn and use an electronic medical record system.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement in tracking sources of errors and in using established guidelines to determine necessary corrective action.
- Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task.
- Ability to develop and maintain collaborative and supportive working relationships with all members of the clinical and clerical staff.
- Actively support program goals and system improvements/changes.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Strong diligence and accuracy in work.
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands to the position.
Requirements:
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or a closely related field AND one (1) year of clerical or technical work experience in maintaining financial records which shall have involved billing and/or collection work.
OR:
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an associate degree in Business Administration. Accounting or a closely related field AND two (2) years of clerical or technical work experience in maintaining financial records which shall have involved billing and/or collection work.
OR:
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND five (5) years of clerical or technical work experience in maintaining financial records which shall have involved billing and/or collection work.

Work Environment – Majority of time is office setting, occasionally on clinical units
