Farmer Mac is seeking a highly motivated professional to join its Treasury team as a Treasury Analyst. This individual will be primarily responsible for supporting Farmer Mac’s funding and liquidity investment desks to fulfill the strategic objectives of the Treasury team.
Position Summary
The Treasury Analyst will be responsible for day-to-day activities on the Treasury team that inform funding and liquidity management strategies. This includes analyzing funding and liquidity needs, assisting the business line in funding cost estimates, coordinating with downstream teams on transaction reporting, validating internal Treasury team databases for data integrity, backing up senior Treasury members on trade execution, analyzing and measuring hedging strategies and supporting Portfolio Managers in trade recommendations and supporting documentation.
The position is highly visible within the Finance area of the company while interacting with the business lines and members of the broker dealer community. The individual filling this role must be detail oriented, capable of balancing competing priorities with various deadlines while displaying the ability to work independently within established parameters.
With Whom You Will Work
The position will report to the Portfolio Manager - Funding. The Treasury Analyst will also support the Portfolio Manager - Liquidity Investments and the Senior Associate- Liquidity Investments. This role works externally with Wall Street broker dealers and internally with business line stake holders, the Asset & Liability Management (ALM) team, Treasury Operations, IT, and other internal departments.
Where and When You Will Work
Work is to be primarily conducted at Farmer Mac’s headquarters at 1999 K Street NW, Washington, DC with minimal travel required. This position requires availability during market hours with the core Monday through Friday business hours of 8:30 am to 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time. It is a requirement for this position to be available as necessary outside of the core business hours and/or business days to keep the funding and investment desks operational. Work outside of normal business hours may be required for planned and unplanned activities to complete time sensitive projects or to attend off-site meetings or events.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Financial Analysis
Work directly with Treasury team members to analyze hedging costs, methodologies and suggest enhancements to current processes- Monitor, analyze and reconcile portfolio data of whole loans, securities, derivatives, and debt issuances to facilitate optimal funding strategies
- Perform financial analysis related to the Company’s use of debt and derivatives to satisfy financial portfolio management, valuation, and financial reporting requirements
- Coordinate with ALM and Accounting teams to enhance portfolio analysis tools to make sure that the Treasury funding and investments desks have timely and actionable information
- Analyze the company’s liquidity position and recommend cost effective strategies to meet internal and regulatory liquidity targets
Support Market Transactions
- Monitor and assess debt capital markets to assist in the development of daily cost of funds curve and assessing funding needs
- Support day-to-day transactions in debt funding and liquidity investment programs including issuance of discount notes and medium-term notes, execution of financial derivative transactions and liquidity investment trades
- Partner with business lines on the pricing of new asset purchases
- Assist Treasury team members with trade booking, funding strategy analysis, ad hoc scenario runs and trade idea generation
Communication
- Support Treasury team members in analysis of short-term and long-term funding opportunities and challenges, while exploring and evaluating new structures with the goal of lowering the company’s cost of funds within approved risk tolerances
- Partner with Treasury team members to automate and enhance reporting capabilities for senior management, ALCO, and the Board of Directors
- Provide superior customer service both externally and internally to other departments
- Work with Treasury colleagues, ALM, Treasury Operations and Accounting teams to reconcile asset and liability portfolios and daily cash position
- Provide financial market intelligence and expertise to internal business units in support of creative products and solutions for Farmer Mac customers
- Support on-going and ad-hoc initiatives for regulatory compliance, including the transition away from LIBOR
Monitor Market Conditions and Farmer Mac’s Financial Markets Access
Support Treasury team members in daily discussions with our Wall Street broker-dealer group while continuously monitoring the company’s access to financial markets.- Day-to-day monitoring of Farmer Mac’s cost of funds curve, market liquidity and potential impacts to Farmer Mac from changes in the market environment
Process Improvement
- Support testing, implementation, and documentation of new Treasury applications
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives to improve resource utilization, data management, knowledge sharing and reporting
- Design, build, test and implement new processes to automate and enhance daily processes across multiple platforms
- Support the review and evaluation of Farmer Mac’s interest rate risk hedging framework, and design, recommend and implement improvements on an on-going basis
Desired Skills & Qualifications
- A working knowledge of financial markets, fixed income securities, interest rate risk concepts such as duration and convexity, derivatives, and term structure of interest rates
- Fundamental understanding of US financial market fundamentals, fixed income market structure and interest rate derivative hedging
- Displayed comfort in communication to both internal and external stakeholders in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
- Excellent spreadsheet automation and data analysis skills required
- Exceptional work ethic and desire to succeed in a high intensity environment
- Able to independently evaluate work processes to identify areas of improvement
- Strong command of Excel, Word and PowerPoint required, competence with VBA, SQL infrastructure preferred
Education and Experience
- Minimum of 2-years’ combined experience in debt issuance, investments, fixed income markets, derivatives, Treasury Operations at a financial institution, ALM and/or financial analysis.
- Bachelor’s degree is required and preferred in a finance, mathematics, engineering or related field
