Position Summary:

The Grant Writer provides support for Feeding Northeast Florida (FNEFL) and reports directly to the Director of Grants & Research. The role identifies and build relationships with new and existing corporate, foundation and government grantors, and contributes to our meeting annual revenue goals by generating compelling and successful grant requests, leading to financial awards. The Grant Writer maintains both telephone and written correspondence with grant makers, crafting letters of inquiry and new grant proposals. The Grant Writer coordinates with FNEFL Directors and Managers in generating required intermediate and final reports for submission to grantors regarding grant funding already received. The Grant Writer updates our grants calendar and database regularly to reflect all submissions and uses grant seeking tools to identify new grant prospects

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Grant Writing and Stewardship (60%)

  • Under the direction of the Director of Grants & Research draft concise, compelling, accurate and targeted grant proposals and reports according to grant makers’ guidelines and deadlines.
  • Prepare and assemble proposal and report packages according to grant makers’ guidelines.
  • Collaborate with grants team to develop strategies for cultivation and solicitation of institutional funders.
  • Collaborate cross-departmentally with appropriate program staff to collect program data, client stories, etc. to fully capture scope of services.
  • Proofread/edit outgoing letters, proposals, reports, and other grant-related documents.

Grants Administration (20%)

  • Maintain Grants Calendar, pulling information from the database/CRM.
  • Coordinate timely acknowledgement of gifts and other correspondence as it relates to institutional donors.
  • Protect Food Bank assets; ensure correct information is entered into database/CRM and appropriate electronic and hard records are kept for each solicitation.
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert for Institutional Giving in the database/CRM.

Research Current and Prospective Grant Makers (10%)

  • Maintain updated research profiles to identify opportunities for increased support from existing funders and sponsors.
  • Conduct thorough, ongoing research on foundation and corporate prospects to identify/recommend opportunities for new grant and sponsorship funders.
  • Provide research profiles and support for meetings with foundation and corporate prospects.

Other Projects (10%)

  • Support events team with FNEFL’s special event preparation and facilitation.
  • Represent the Food Bank at internal and external community events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in nonprofit development with an emphasis on grant writing.
  • Proven track record of successful grant and sponsorship applications at $10,000 and up level.
  • Superb writing and editing skills with ability to translate program initiatives and impact into strong solicitation letters, proposals and reports for a variety of audiences.
  • Solid understanding of best practices in institutional giving — familiarity with local business and foundation community a plus.
  • Experience working with prospect research tools, donor databases and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects at once in fast paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Self-starter, strong organizational skills, attention to detail and creative problem solving.
  • Excellent communications, interpersonal and customer service skills; comfort with public speaking.
  • Ability to attend work functions outside of normal work hours, on weekends and evenings, as needed.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license and good driving record.

Physical Requirements:

The ability to perform following physical activities are necessary in the performance of this job: Sit and use a computer for long periods of time; use a computer to accomplish the duties of the position (including typing and seeing); read and write in English; conduct tours in warehouse on a regular basis; think strategically, communicate expectations, and establish priorities.

Job Specifications (Work Environment):

This position is in an office/warehouse environment and requires a flexible schedule and travel to accommodate FNEFL events. Work is performed indoors and outdoors with regular exposure to all weather conditions. In instances of a federal, state, or local declared emergency, FNEFL is typically considered an essential service and emergency responder; all employees may be called in to perform regular or emergent duties.
