The Application Specific Integrated Circuits R&D Department in the Particle Physics Division seeks a motivated ASIC Development Engineer to lead and/or contribute to research activities and engineering work focused on developing custom instrumentation for extreme radiation and/or cryogenic environments.
The department has three design groups and one test group on Analog and Quantum Cryoelectronics, Ultrafast timing and Cross-cutting initiatives and High-speed and Advanced Digital group. The ASIC Design activities involves developing readout and control electronics in deep sub-micron technologies. Current projects include high-speed data converters, time to digital converters, low noise amplifiers, ROICs for pixel detectors, ROICs for cryogenic detectors, on-chip data processing and on-chip machine learning.
This is a seasonal position
You Will:
  • Perform a leading role in either Analog and RFIC design or Digital design or IC Testing while being able to contribute individually to major design tasks.
  • Design circuits using Cadence CAD/EDA or a similar environment or test Circuits using a National Instruments system
  • Execute physical and functional circuit and system verification.
  • Prepare documentation for the design.
  • Contributes effectively within a diverse workforce and upholds Fermilab’s dedication to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
We Are Looking For:
  • Currently pursuing MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering with background in solid state circuits and integrated circuit design
  • BS or MS post-degree experience demonstrating past involvement in development of mixed analog-digital designs
  • Readiness for working on challenging projects that may have tight schedules
  • Capability of working as part of a design team in a research and development environment
  • Experience with modern front-end and back-end CAD/EDA design tools, such as Cadence, Synopsys and Mentor for the IC design or ASIC testing skills
  • Strong computer skills and competence in performing analytical engineering calculations, in drawing schematics and in documentation

The selected candidate will demonstrate good judgment, ability to work in a project team, and should be motivated to carry out research activities focused on quantum instrumentation. The position includes delivering presentations internally, at national and international workshops, and at the topical conferences.
