Job Summary:
The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for the initial assessment of patients. The MA is responsible for completing blood draws, taking vital signs and collecting valuable information from which our providers make clinical decisions. The ideal Medical Assistant has the desire to be on a highly functioning team that works well together with Clinical Teams, Community Health Workers, and Patient Navigators in order to provide the best healthcare solutions for our patients. Often, the MA is the first medical staff personnel to interact with a patient, setting the tone for the visit.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assures patient history is complete
- Obtains vital signs
- Prepares patients for minor surgical procedures
- Prepares patients for pelvic exams
- Assists with pelvic exams as needed
- Prepares lesion/wounds for examination
- Dresses/redresses wounds after examination
- Prepares and collects HIV, blood glucose, urine sample, strep, and Hemoglobin C1a screenings
- Print lab results from websites
- Notes all labs sent out
- Disposes of sharps and other hazardous materials
- Ensures sharps are locked
- Sterilize exam room
- Ensures instruments are clean and in good working condition
- Monitors and restocks examination room
- Notifies Supervisor of supplies needing to be ordered
- Performs other duties as directed by supervisor
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Possesses strong organizational skills
- Ability to communicate with the public
- Maintains a professional relationship and positive attitude with co-workers, the public, patients, and the entire organization
- Excellent customer service and problem solving skills
- The ability to communicate fluently in both Spanish and English is preferred
Education and Experience:
- High School or Equivalency Diploma
- CPR Certification Required
- Prior experience is a plus, but not required
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to hear and communicate with clients and staff on the telephone and those who are served “in person.”
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Must have vision that is adequate to read memo’s computer screen, registration forms, and other documents.
- Must possess manual dexterity, to perform writing and keyboarding tasks.
- Must be able to bend, squat, kneel, and crouch.
- OSHA Level 1
