Role Description
This is a full-time or part-time hybrid role based in Dallas, TX, for an Estimator specializing in Utility and Earthwork. At Firefly Earthworks, our estimators play a key role in shaping project success from the ground up.
You’ll work with minimal oversight, often coordinating directly with design teams, clients, and owners. Responsibilities include reviewing project plans, preparing detailed take-offs and cost estimates, soliciting subcontractor and supplier quotes, and developing competitive, accurate bids. You’ll also analyze labor, materials, and time requirements, help manage project budgets and timelines, and collaborate closely with project managers during preconstruction.
This position requires solid experience in earthwork estimating, with a strong preference for utility estimating. Familiarity with infrastructure, highway, paving, and civil projects is highly desirable.
While much of the estimating work can be completed remotely, occasional site visits and in-person meetings are expected.
Key Responsibilities
- Review project documents, specifications, and drawings
- Prepare detailed quantity take-offs and cost estimates
- Solicit pricing from vendors and subcontractors
- Analyze material, labor, and equipment requirements
- Develop competitive and complete bid proposals
- Collaborate with project managers and support preconstruction planning
- Conduct site visits to confirm job conditions and measurements
- Maintain cost history and update estimating tools
Requirements
- Proven experience in estimating, especially for earthwork and utility projects
- Skilled in cost estimating, project planning, and budget analysis
- Strong understanding of grading, utility installation, paving, and demolition
- Proficient in reviewing blueprints, schematics, and technical documents
- Technologically proficient, with strong computer and software skills
- Comfortable using estimating software and digital tools
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Willingness to travel to job sites as needed
- Comfortable wearing PPE and meeting basic physical demands of a construction environment
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills
- Highly detail-oriented with strong analytical thinking
- Experience with green or sustainable infrastructure is a plus
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to wear PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, vest, boots, etc.)
- Ability to walk uneven terrain, kneel, bend, and occasionally lift materials
- May require climbing ladders or stairs during site visits
- Frequent use of computer systems, email, and estimating platforms
- Must adhere to all safety protocols on active job sites
