Position Summary

The Director of Planned Giving is a senior fundraising professional responsible for building, managing, and growing a comprehensive planned giving program to support the long-term sustainability of Food Bank For New York City. This individual will identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of donors and prospects with the capacity and interest to make legacy and deferred gifts, including bequests, charitable trusts, retirement assets, and other planned giving vehicles.

This role requires an entrepreneurial spirit, deep relationship-building skills, and a strong understanding of planned giving strategies and estate planning principles. The Director will work closely with colleagues across the philanthropy, finance, and legal teams, and will play a critical role in advancing the mission of ending food insecurity for good.

Compensation for this role is between $120k - $150k

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of 150 planned giving prospects and blended gift donors.
  • Design and implement a multi-year planned giving strategy to increase legacy commitments and build long-term revenue.
  • Establish infrastructure, systems, and materials to support a robust planned giving program, including donor education, marketing, and reporting.
  • Create recognition and stewardship opportunities for members of Food Bank’s legacy society
  • Identify new prospects through data analysis, referrals, and partnerships with other development team members.
  • Conduct personalized outreach and develop tailored engagement strategies for each prospect.
  • Serve as the lead solicitor for planned gifts, working with donors, their advisors, and internal teams to structure meaningful gift arrangements.
  • Partner with major gift officers to incorporate blended gift strategies into donor conversations.
  • Develop stewardship plans for legacy donors, including written communications, impact updates, and recognition opportunities.
  • Work closely with the marketing team to create compelling planned giving collateral and digital campaigns.
  • Provide training and guidance to frontline fundraisers to help identify and refer planned giving prospects.
  • Partner with finance and legal counsel to ensure accurate gift processing, documentation, and compliance.
  • Track and report on planned giving performance, pipeline, and projections.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records in database.
  • Prepare briefings, proposals, and reports for colleagues and leadership as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive experience in fundraising, with at least 3 years focused on planned giving.
  • Demonstrated success soliciting and closing planned gifts, including bequests, charitable trusts, and beneficiary designations.
  • Strong knowledge of estate planning principles, tax laws, and charitable giving vehicles.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.
  • Experience using CRM systems such as Salesforce or Raiser’s Edge preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; JD, CFP, CAP, or other related certification a plus.
